Job description

Job Title: Benefit Advisor

Location: East Harlem, NY (198 E. 121st St) — On-Site & Virtual (Hybrid eligible)

Client: Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS)

Job Type: Full-Time, Direct Hire

Schedule: Standard Business Hours

Compensation: $42,952.00 – $58,185.40 / year

Position Summary

Randstad is seeking a Benefit Advisor to join CUCS in East Harlem. Delivering person-centered services onsite and virtually, this role provides eligibility screening, application assistance, advocacy, and care coordination to help New Yorkers access critical resources and achieve long-term stability. The Advisor maintains high compliance standards, thorough documentation, and active caseload management per CUCS and funder guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Eligibility & Applications: Assess client needs using approved tools to identify city, state, federal, and private benefits; assist with applications, documentation, and interview or appeal prep.

  • Caseload Management: Manage a fluid caseload to meet productivity benchmarks; track application statuses, resolve delays, advocate for clients, and lead appeals or mediation.

  • Coordination & Outreach: Refer clients to external providers (legal, housing, food, employment); participate in outreach and community presentations to drive enrollment.

  • Documentation & Compliance: Maintain strict confidentiality and accurately record all client interactions, services, and outcomes in funder databases within set timeframes.

  • Supervision & Collaboration: Participate in supervisory and team meetings, address operational barriers proactively, complete mandatory trainings, and use incentives (e.g., MetroCards) to support retention.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required (Bachelor’s in Social Work, Psychology, or related field preferred).

  • Experience: Public benefits navigation (SNAP, Medicaid, SSI/SSDI), case management, or human services experience preferred.

  • Core Competencies: interpersonal, advocacy, and crisis-intervention skills; database proficiency; ability to manage fluid priorities in an inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Eligibility & Application Assistance: Assess client needs in person or virtually using approved screening tools to identify applicable city, state, federal, and private benefits; assist clients with completing applications, gathering documentation, and preparing for interviews or appeals.

  • Caseload Management & Tracking: Manage an active, fluid caseload to meet productivity and quality benchmarks; track benefit application statuses in database systems, resolve delays, advocate for clients, and initiate appeals or mediation as needed.

  • Care Coordination & Outreach: Facilitate referrals to external providers (legal services, housing support, food resources, financial counseling, employment); participate in virtual and in-person community outreach, engagement activities, and presentations to promote enrollment.

  • Documentation & Compliance: Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to privacy standards; accurately document all client interactions, services rendered, and outcomes in funder and internal databases within required timeframes.

  • Supervision & Team Collaboration: Prepare for and participate in supervisory meetings, contribute to a respectful and inclusive team environment, analyze operational barriers proactively, and complete mandatory trainings using available incentives (e.g., MetroCards, emergency items) to support client retention.
