FLEET MECHANIC

Transportation & Fleet Operations

Job Summary

The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing Circle S Ranch vehicles, trailers, and heavy equipment. This position ensures the company fleet operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with DOT and company standards. The Fleet Mechanic performs preventive maintenance, troubleshoots mechanical and electrical issues, and supports daily operations by minimizing vehicle downtime and maintaining accurate service records.

Reporting Relationships
  • Reports directly to the Fleet Maintenance Shop Foreman or Fleet Manager.

  • Works closely with other mechanics, drivers, and operations personnel.

  • No direct reports.

Essential Functions & ResponsibilitiesMaintenance & Repair
  • Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on tractors, trailers, and heavy equipment.

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.

  • Service engines, brakes, steering systems, suspensions, and drive components.

  • Conduct DOT inspections and ensure all vehicles meet safety and compliance standards.

  • Replace or repair tires, hoses, filters, and other parts as needed.

  • Perform welding or fabrication repairs when necessary.

  • Assist in emergency roadside repairs or recovery operations.

Preventive Maintenance
  • Follow established maintenance schedules to reduce unplanned breakdowns.

  • Complete maintenance checklists and verify all work performed.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop and work areas.

  • Inspect equipment before and after repairs to confirm functionality and safety.

  • Communicate recurring issues or maintenance trends to the Shop Foreman.

Safety & Compliance
  • Adhere to all Circle S Ranch and OSHA safety standards.

  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.

  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures and safe equipment handling practices.

  • Maintain compliance with DOT, EPA, and company environmental standards.

  • Report any incidents, injuries, or near misses promptly.

Recordkeeping & Communication
  • Accurately document all repairs, inspections, and parts used in maintenance systems or work orders.

  • Communicate equipment status, delays, or issues to the Fleet Manager or Shop Foreman.

  • Assist with inventory tracking and parts management as needed.

  • Coordinate with drivers and dispatch to schedule service work around operational needs.

  • Participate in maintenance meetings and training programs.

Skills, Education, and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade certification in diesel technology preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in diesel or heavy equipment maintenance.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.

  • Experience with diagnostic tools, software, and repair manuals.

  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and schematics.

  • Welding and fabrication skills preferred.

  • Familiarity with DOT regulations and commercial vehicle inspections.

  • Proficiency in using hand and power tools safely and effectively.

  • Valid driver's license required; CDL Class A preferred or willingness to obtain.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds regularly.

  • Requires frequent standing, bending, climbing, and working under vehicles.

  • Must be able to work in hot, cold, noisy, and dusty environments.

  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, or on-call shifts as needed.

  • Must wear required PPE including safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toe boots.
