POSITION: Car Cleaner

REPORTS TO: Location Supervisor/Manager

JOB TYPE: Full-Time

JOB SUMMARY: The Car Cleaner is responsible for ensuring that railcars are properly cleaned, maintained, and prepared for service. This role involves removing debris, sweeping, washing, and performing minor maintenance tasks to keep railcars in compliance with company and regulatory standards. Work is physical in nature and requires frequent kneeling, bending, and stooping.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Open and close railcar doors as needed.
  • Inspect railcar interiors for debris, residue, or potential damage and report any defects to the supervisor.
  • Remove heavy debris and thoroughly sweep the interior of railcars.
  • Wash out railcars as required, ensuring compliance with cleanliness standards.
  • Lubricate railcar components to maintain smooth operation.
  • Operate forklifts and other equipment to assist with cleaning and minor repairs.
  • Stock and store freight car materials as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring compliance with safety guidelines.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties in the railyard and workspace.
  • Assist with rough demolition tasks and minor repairs using hand tools, cutting torches, and welding equipment as required.
  • Follow all safety procedures and protocols while performing duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, bend, and stoop frequently.
  • Work involves lifting and carrying materials, tools, and debris.

Lifting/Carrying:

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Assistance is available for lifting heavier loads.

Work Hours:

  • 8-hour shifts, Monday to Friday.
  • Overtime and weekend availability as needed.
  • Holiday work may be required based on operational needs.

Equipment Requirements:

  • Must be able to operate forklifts and other cleaning equipment.
  • Experience with hand tools and cutting torches is a plus.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in railcar cleaning, maintenance, or a similar labor-intensive role is preferred.

Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge is beneficial.

Language and Reasoning Skills:

  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English fluently and professionally.

Work Environment:

  • Outdoor work environment with exposure to various weather conditions.
  • Must adhere to all safety protocols while working in an active railyard.

Vision/Hearing/Speaking Requirements:

  • Must have sufficient vision to observe areas needing attention.
  • Ability to hear and understand verbal instructions and environmental sounds.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
