Job description

The Sr. Manager, Railcar Mechanical Services provides strategic leadership for Cando's railcar mechanical services across North America. The role is responsible for developing the long-term strategy, standards, and processes that support safe, reliable, and profitable railcar repair operations. Working collaboratively with Operations, Service Delivery, Business Development, Mechanical, and Safety teams, this position develops system-wide railcar maintenance programs, supports new business opportunities, establishes repair capabilities, and leads the implementation of innovative equipment, technologies, and repair processes. The position serves as Cando's technical authority for railcar mechanical services while ensuring all repair activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with regulatory and customer requirements.

General Accountabilities

Service & Leadership

  • Lead the development and execution of Cando’s railcar mechanical strategy.
  • Develop and maintain a company-wide railcar mechanical standards, policies, and procedures
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal customers, regulators, and key industry partners to ensure Cando’s services are well positioned to capitalize on current and future opportunities
  • Lead new initiatives by establishing goals, securing equipment, developing standard operating procedures, and setting project schedules
  • Monitor internal customer satisfaction while identifying service needs and efficiencies that would benefit or enhance operations
  • Contribute to developing strategies and plans to grow Cando’s mechanical services
  • Lead the development of mechanical training initiatives which ensure that teams are knowledgeable of safety, equipment and regulatory requirements.

Operational Management

  • Implement and maintain effective safety systems and programs which maintain regulatory compliance
  • Conduct periodic reviews and/or audits to ensure safety and operational protocols are being adhered to and high-quality services are being delivered
  • Analyze failures or concerns related to rail equipment and work with internal departments to identify trends and implement changes or corrective actions
  • Work with customers or internal departments to identify and implement site focused operational solutions based on local needs
  • Participate in the development of a sound strategy for operational excellence including asset utilization, people management, safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Establish annual budgets and monitor material inventory levels across the Cando system.
  • Manage capital and maintenance budgets, identifying future needs, equipment issues, and maintenance requirements
  • Manage deployment of railcar assets including purchasing, development, refurbishment or upgrades
  • Maintain knowledge of industry news, trends and regulations that may have an impact on Cando’s services, and then develop or implement strategies to address these needs

  • Strong knowledge and background in railcar fleet maintenance, repair management, equipment loading, and establishing quality assurance programs.

Education & Experience

  • Minimum ten (10) years’ experience in a management position with full responsibilities for multiple site/service offerings
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance/commerce/business/engineering or equivalent industry experience
  • Experience in building safety culture, service culture, and strong teams with an understanding of Safety Management Systems
  • Strong knowledge and background in railcar fleet maintenance, repair management, equipment loading, and quality assurance and inventory programs.
  • Experience in railway or systems management is an asset
  • Proven track record of entrepreneurial leadership
