Rail Signalling information

What is a rail signalling job?

Rail signalling jobs involve the design, installation, maintenance, and operation of the systems that control train movements on railway networks. Professionals in this field ensure the safe and efficient management of rail traffic by managing track signals, points, and communication systems. These roles are critical for preventing collisions, maintaining schedules, and supporting the overall safety of rail operations. Rail signalling jobs can include roles such as signal engineers, technicians, and signal operators.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a rail signalling engineer?

To thrive as a Rail Signalling Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical or electronic engineering and an understanding of rail signalling principles, often supported by a relevant engineering degree or apprenticeship. Familiarity with industry-standard signalling systems, CAD software, and safety regulations such as IRSE licensing is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the safe and efficient operation of railway networks, minimizing risks and service disruptions.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in rail signalling, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in rail signalling often encounter challenges such as integrating new technologies with legacy systems, ensuring compliance with strict safety standards, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams during infrastructure upgrades. Addressing these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, continuous learning to stay updated on industry regulations and technologies, and effective communication with colleagues from engineering, operations, and maintenance. Proactively participating in training and certification programs can also help professionals remain adaptable and ensure the safe and efficient operation of railway networks.

Could you be the full-time AirTrain Agent at JFK we're looking for?
Take on a new challenge and bring your customer service and operational expertise to a dynamic and safety-focused environment. You'll report to the Field Operations Supervisor and work alongside dedicated, responsive, and safety-conscious teammates.
You'll be the face of the AirTrain system, ensuring a safe, smooth, and efficient experience for all passengers. Day-to-day, you'll work closely with operations, maintenance, and emergency response teams, managing customer interactions, supporting train recovery, and maintaining station readiness.
You'll specifically take care of customer assistance, train fault troubleshooting, and fare collection support-but also emergency response, crowd control, and minor custodial duties.
We'll look to you for:
  • Delivering excellent customer service on trains and in stations
  • Managing service disruptions and supporting train recovery
  • Responding to emergencies and assisting with customer evacuations
  • Inspecting and troubleshooting station and train equipment
  • Supporting fare collection and documenting operational activities
  • Operating trains for repositioning and manual movements
  • Performing minor custodial tasks with appropriate PPE

All about you
We value passion and attitude over experience. That's why we don't expect you to have every single skill. Instead, we've listed some that we think will help you succeed and grow in this role:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in customer service preferred
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Comfortable making independent decisions within guidelines
  • Familiarity with troubleshooting minor mechanical or electrical issues
  • Willingness to work variable hours and locations across the AirTrain system
  • Physically able to board/alight trains and stand for extended periods

Things you'll enjoy
Join us on a life-long transformative journey - the rail industry is here to stay, so you can grow and develop new skills and experiences throughout your career. You'll also:
  • Enjoy stability, challenges, and a long-term career free from boring daily routines
  • Collaborate with helpful colleagues and cross-functional teams
  • Contribute to a safe and innovative transit system
  • Utilize our structured and supportive working environment
  • Steer your career in whatever direction you choose across functions and locations
  • Benefit from our investment in your development
  • Progress toward supervisory or operations leadership roles
  • Receive a fair and dynamic reward package, plus comprehensive social coverage

Hourly Rate: $27.55
You don't need to be a train enthusiast to thrive with us. We guarantee that when you step onto one of our trains with your friends or family, you'll be proud. If you're up for the challenge, we'd love to hear from you!
