Essential Job Summary:

The Supervisor of Rail Operations carries out the daily rail operating plan during the assigned overnight shift. The role leads employees and coordinates container handling, unloading, equipment and material flow. Essential Job Functions: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.
  • Review the operating plan and prior-shift handoff, then assign employees, equipment and track use based on safety, workload and yard capacity.
  • Direct gondola unloading, material transfer, trailer loading, weighing, sorting and yard housekeeping during the shift.
  • Coordinate inbound and outbound rail activity with Scale Operations, landfill leadership and other operating shifts.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of loaded and empty gondolas, including location, arrival, unloading status, release and any exceptions.
  • Verify unattended railcars are secured and maintain clear separation between employees and mobile equipment movements.
  • Lead a start-of-shift briefing covering expected rail activity, employee assignments, track conditions, equipment and communication channels.
  • Monitor production, unloading progress and equipment availability throughout the shift.
  • Respond to delays, equipment downtime, staffing gaps, weather and changing landfill conditions; adjust the plan and escalate unresolved issues.
  • Review rail and operating records for accuracy, including car numbers, load status, material weights and release activity.
  • Lead shift safety talks, reinforce company and railroad procedures and coach employees on rail communication and the safe use of assigned equipment.
  • Respond to injuries, near misses, derailments, railcar damage, spills and other incidents; secure the area, make required notifications and support the investigation.
  • Monitor attendance, approve time records, handle routine employee requests and address performance or conduct concerns promptly.
  • Prepare a written end-of-shift report covering production, railcar inventory, staffing, equipment, track restrictions, safety concerns and follow-up items.
Requirements and Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required; relevant rail, logistics or technical education is preferred.
  • 5 years or more of experience in rail, terminal, solid waste, bulk-material or heavy industrial operations.
  • At least 3+ years of experience leading employees or coordinating an operating shift is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of gondola railcars, railcar movement, unloading, securement and yard operations is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with wheel loaders, excavators or similar heavy equipment is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of applicable OSHA, DOT, FRA, railroad and company safety requirements.
  • Clear radio communication, good judgment and the ability to manage several time-sensitive activities at once.

  • Able to work nights, weekends and holidays based on the assigned schedule.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
