WHO WE ARE We are the Metropolitan Council, the regional government for the seven-county Twin Cities metropolitan area. We plan 30 years ahead for the future of the metropolitan area and provide regional transportation, wastewater, and housing services. More information about us on our website.

Metro Transit is one of the country's largest transit systems, employs more than 3,000 people, and provides more than 80 million rides a year through an integrated network of buses, light rail and commuter trains, as well as resources for those who carpool, vanpool, walk or bike in the Twin Cities. How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region.

Metro Transit is currently seeking Janitors to provide janitorial services to maintain a clean and neat appearance of Metro Transit indoor and outdoor locations. Positions are bid by union seniority and new employees can expect to work the overnight shift. This posting will create a six-month eligible list from the date of posting to be used for current and future openings.

Note: The current vacancy is an overnight shift between 12:00 am - 08:00 am. Additional schedule details will be discussed during the interview process. What you would do in this job Performs daily general cleaning duties in an indoor environment.

These activities may include sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, emptying trash containers, washing windows, cleaning, and stocking restrooms. Performs daily general cleaning duties in an outdoor environment. These activities may include snow removal, weeding, graffiti removal, and litter pickup.

Traveling to different facilities to perform cleaning duties may be required. Performs overhead dusting and light fixture cleaning. Strip and wax floors and cleans carpeting.

Orders supplies and maintains a well-stocked, organized closet. Performs other duties as assigned. What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications) Any of the following combinations of janitorial experience; experience should include all or most of the following duties: general cleaning, washing windows, stocking restrooms, snow removal, graffiti removal, litter pickup, stripping and waxing floors and carpet cleaning.

High school diploma or GED AND two (2) years previous janitorial experience. License/Certifications: Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications): Previous business/industrial building and/or public facility janitorial experience.

Experience working with diverse populations and understanding the value different experiences bring to the workplace. What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job: Ability to work all shifts. Ability to work with harsh cleaning compounds/solvents.

Ability to learn on the job skills. Ability to work well with others. Ability to follow written schedule/instructions.

Ability to lift up to 45 pounds at least four times during an eight hour period. Ability to work with limited supervision. Acceptable work record (applies to internal ATU candidates).

Additional information Union/Grade: Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1005/Grade 11 FLSA: Non-exempt Safety Sensitive: No What your work environment would be: This job will require work near moving parts or equipment, in high precarious places, around fumes or airborne particles and in outdoor weather conditions, and in some cases, during an entire eight (8) hour shift. Must be able to work around toxic or caustic chemicals. Will work in a moderate noise environment.

This job may require operation of wet and dry vacuum, buffers and polishers, carpet extractors and cleaners. Work settings may be indoor or outdoor, in standard transit locations and in an office environment. Shifts are picked by seniority and a new employee can expect to start on the overnight shift.

What steps the recruitment process involves: We review your minimum qualifications. We request and review Work Record Evaluations (WRE) on ATU internals only. We rate your education and experience.

We conduct a structured panel interview and physical agility test. Once you have successfully completed the steps above, then: If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety-sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job.

If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor, and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation. If you are already an employee of the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (if moving from a non-safety sensitive position to a safety-sensitive position) and criminal background checks if the job you're applying for is safety-sensitive, is a supervisory or management job, is in the Finance, Information Services, Audit, or Human Resources departments, or has access to financial records, files/databases, cash, vouchers or transit fare cards.
