Description

Position Summary:

To perform all duties necessary for diagnostic x-ray procedures. To provide patients with more than they expect.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Performs diagnostic x-ray procedures as directed by physicians.
  • Verifies correct patient and exam ordered before performing exam and dresses patient appropriately for exam. Elicits pertinent information concerning the procedure and the patient's history from the medical chart and/or the patient.
  • Explains the procedure to the patient. Positions the patient appropriately. Selects the appropriate cassette size and exposure factors. Cannulates veins for administration of contrast material or other medications.
  • Assists the radiologist/PA during special procedures.
  • Monitors the patient's condition during procedures.
  • Performs DEXA scans.
  • Prepares study to be read by the radiologist:
    • Completes procedure information on the appropriate forms.
    • Writes diagnosis information on the charge ticket when appropriate and types of relevant information into the RIS.
    • Retrieves old studies for comparison when requested.
    • Verify images are on PACS and labeled correctly before taking pertinent paperwork to the reading room.
  • Participates in the supervision of student technologists and new hires.
  • Performs related work as required.

Performance Measures:

  • Produces the highest quality images possible.
  • Utilizes time efficiently to maximize productivity and minimize patient waiting time.
  • Is proficient in the operation of all radiographic units used for general radiography.
  • Stays up-to-date on the latest techniques, procedures, and policies. Abides by Clinic policies and guidelines.
  • Maintains professional, considerate, and congenial work relationships with patients, staff and the public. Observes strict rules of patient confidentiality.
  • Keeps equipment and work area clean, organized, well stocked and functioning properly.
  • Is responsible for training radiology students and radiology technician hires.
Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Experience: At least six months of similar or related experience.
  • Education: A two year college degree or completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school or completion of a specialized and extensive in-house training or apprenticeship program. Completion of course in Radiologic technology approved by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists; current certification (ARRT) (R) with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Kansas State licensure and CPR certification required.
  • Interpersonal Skills: A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to courtesy, good attitude and tact. Clear and effective communication is required. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and/or is usually of a personal or sensitive nature. Work may involve motivating or influencing others. Work involves being a team player. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) becomes necessary.
  • Other Skills:
    • Knowledge of Computed Radiology/Digital Radiology, anatomy, and physiology to focus the exam on the area of concern; common safety hazards and precautions; radiation safety to minimize dose to self and patients; x-ray physics and instrumentation to provide the best possible image quality with minimal radiation dose.
    • Skill in vein cannulization; recognizing and responding to patient's needs; monitoring the patient's condition; sterile techniques and procedures; maintaining records and recording information; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff, and the public.
    • Ability to react calmly to emergency situations; communicate clearly; interpret, adapt, and apply established guidelines, yet be flexible to meet the individual needs of the patient; work with general supervision, structuring own work patterns within the general outline, referring unusual situations or problems to the supervisor; maintain quality control standards; and work effectively during periods of stress resulting from patient flow and office demands.

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination for operation and repair of all departmental equipment.
  • Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds; lifts and appropriately positions patients weighing up to 300 pounds.
  • Requires eyesight correctable to 20/20 to operate equipment and review developed films.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
