Job Duties
Applicants hired in this position receive a 10% Special Pay incentive for as long as they are an employee performing the duties of a Tower Technician or Tower Specialist. Employees will be compensated with an incentive amounting to 10% of the salary paid on a semi-monthly basis and if the employee changes positions or discontinues performance as a Tower Technician or Tower Specialist, the incentive will be discontinued effective the date the duties change or are discontinued.
About the Position:
The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Radio Tower Specialist in our Communications Division at State Police Headquarters, in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The job duties for this position include but are not limited to:
โ€ข Installing microwave and base station antennas, transmission lines, grounding systems, obstruction lighting systems and associated equipment.
โ€ข Inspecting and maintaining microwave and base station antenna, transmission line, radio tower lighting system, and related equipment mounted on poles, towers and other structures working at heights of up to 400 feet.
โ€ข Repairing communications equipment/structures for VSP and that of other agencies on a routine and emergency basis.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge:
โ€ข Of repair and maintenance of propane and diesel emergency power plants and associated switching gear.
Skill:
โ€ข In the use of hand and power tools.
โ€ข In electricity and the operation of electrical test equipment.
โ€ข In antenna system operation, technologies and installation on towers and associated structures.
Ability:
โ€ข To operate electric welder, acetylene torch, metal lathe, drill press and other power equipment.
โ€ข To install and repair radio tower antennas, lighting systems, and tower equipment.
โ€ข To work rotating shifts.
โ€ข To respond to calls for emergency service on a 24-hour basis, when necessary, to establish, restore, or prevent service outages.
โ€ข To climb heights of 400 feet.
โ€ข To lift 50 pounds without assistance.
โ€ข Possession of a valid Virginia Driver's License required.
โ€ข National Association of Tower Erectors (NATE) approved competent climber, advanced climber and tower rescue certification.
โ€ข Continued employment is contingent upon successfully completion and maintenance of the National Association of Tower Erectors (NATE) approved competent climber, advanced climber, and tower rescue certification.
โ€ข Must weigh less than 280lbs., and have a waist girth no greater than 60 inches.
โ€ข Extensive overnight travel throughout the state required.
โ€ข Must live within 90 Minutes State Police Headquarters (SPHQ) located at 7700 Midlothian Turnpike, North Chesterfield, Virginia 23235.
โ€ข Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Additional Considerations
โ€ข First aid and CPR certification preferred.
