Job description

Summary

The Radio Systems Technician is a field service position that routinely travels to client sites to install, adjust and troubleshoot mobile radios. This position tests circuits and wiring for mobile radio equipment and communication systems. They work independently and may occasionally need to work with team members. Mobile Radio Technicians also provide coverage for Telecom Technicians on the team.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Establish communications systems by installing, operating, and maintaining voice and data telecommunications network circuits and equipment to the specifications provided.
  • Install radio communications systems, antennas and GPS equipment into vehicles or mobile command centers.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose problems with equipment as necessary, including providing technical support for two-way radio equipment, work with both analog and digital systems, both mobile and portable.
  • Install, program, maintain, and repair two-way radios, multi-couplers, antenna systems, power systems, and two-way radio dispatch console equipment.
  • Install and troubleshoot P25 LMR infrastructure equipment at existing and new site locations.
  • Test, tune, and align duplexers, portable radios and mobile radios.
  • Set up, configure, and use service and test instrumentation to perform communication tests and maintenance.
  • Perform coverage drive test.
  • Conduct site surveys for equipment installation and ensure R56 standards are met.
  • Prepare site installation and test reports.
  • Dismantle the interior and exterior of vehicles (seats, carpeting, flooring, dash and interior panels, headliners, lights) to prepare vehicle for installation of new systems.

Secondary Responsibilities as Backup Telecom Technicians

  • Establish communications systems by installing, operating, and maintaining voice and data telecommunications network circuits and equipment to the specifications provided.
  • Plans network installations by studying customer orders, plans, manuals, and technical specifications; ordering and gathering equipment, supplies, materials, and tools; assessing installation site; and preparing an installation diagram.
  • Maintain customer rapport by listening to and resolving concerns and answering questions in a timely and productive manner.
  • Document network by labeling and routing equipment and cables and recording configuration diagrams and specifications, including client labeling standards.
  • Verify service by testing circuits, equipment, and alarms; and identifying, correcting, or escalating problems.
  • Maintain network by troubleshooting and repairing outages, testing network backup procedures, and updating documentation.
  • Enhance department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock, notifying the Warehouse Manager of needed orders, and verifying receipts.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical publications
  • Attend installs and site surveys with team to learn alongside more seasoned technicians.
  • Install, troubleshoot (to the device level), and repair or replace various equipment to maintain the integrity of the bulk electric system and other different client-owned systems.
  • Work with the client's Control Center to ensure that outages are minimized, and that each client is informed throughout the whole clearance process.
  • Uphold general housekeeping guidelines, such as leaving a site cleaner than how you found it, using clean/proper cable securing practices, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong organizational and technical skills
  • Regional and overnight travel up to 75%
  • Holds a valid CA driver’s license, current insurance, and clean driving record
  • Reliable and appropriate transportation that will be able to carry tools and equipment to sites. Example: 3⁄4 ton trucks are not preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of safe work practices around high-voltage equipment and construction/industrial environments
  • Must be able and willing to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) i.e., boots, Arc-Rated clothing
  • Computer literacy and demonstrated work experience/knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite
  • Excellent client service and interpersonal skills are required
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and attention to detail
  • Experience installing fiber-optic and copper network infrastructure and creating low-voltage power connections preferred
  • Experience with low voltage work required
  • Ability to do basic construction and operate tools (For example: drill and mount a switch in racks or under a conference room desk)
  • Ability to read communication wiring diagrams, rack elevation drawings, and construction packages

Education and Work Experience

  • 2+ years mobile radio installation / technician experience required
  • 1+ years telecommunications technician experience supporting IT projects, preferred
  • Associate’s Degree with 2+ years’ experience or Bachelor’s Degree with 1+ years’ experience

Physical Requirements

Work is sometimes performed in an environment, using simple, easy muscular movements, involving only the handling of light materials, tools, or equipment in easy work positions, and with no special speed requirements or long stretches of exertion. Vision requirements for this job include close vision and the ability to focus. Remaining in a stationary position and in front of a computer screen for prolonged periods will be necessary. Repeating motions such as typing, that may include wrists, hands and/or fingers are necessary. Moderate physical effort may be necessary. May require stooping, bending, kneeling, periodic lifting up to 50 pounds, crawling and walking. Requires dexterity to connect network and server equipment, peripherals, and make minor repairs to computer equipment.
