Radar Signal Processing specialists focus on analyzing radar data to improve detection and tracking, while Radar Systems Engineers handle the overall design and integration of radar systems. Both roles require technical expertise but differ in scope and responsibilities, often collaborating within the same industry sectors such as defense and aerospace.

What is radar signal processing?

Radar signal processing refers to the techniques and algorithms used to analyze and interpret signals received by radar systems. This process involves filtering, detecting, and extracting useful information such as the location, speed, and characteristics of objects. Radar signal processing is essential for applications like air traffic control, weather monitoring, military surveillance, and automotive safety systems. Professionals in this field often use advanced mathematical methods and software tools to enhance signal clarity and reliability.

What are some common challenges faced by radar signal processing engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Radar signal processing engineers often encounter challenges such as managing high volumes of data in real time, distinguishing targets from clutter or noise, and adapting algorithms to evolving hardware and operational environments. Overcoming these challenges typically involves leveraging advanced filtering techniques, optimizing code for efficient computation, and collaborating closely with hardware engineers and system architects. Regular cross-disciplinary meetings and continuous professional development in areas like machine learning and digital signal processing can also help engineers stay ahead of technological demands.

When you join our team, you'll be part of a special collection of problem solvers, thought leaders, and innovators. Join us and take your place in space.
At the Mission Payloads Division (MPD), we are pioneers in remote sensing systems that guide our country's space enterprise. Our talented and dynamic people create and flourish in electronics, sensors, radar, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced data network domains. We boldly advance technology through our research and development and then forward to demonstration and integration. With innovative laboratories and prototyping, MPD delivers groundbreaking results. We guide our Department of Defense, intelligence community, and civil clients to enhance national productivity and security and tackle the most critical missions. Bring your intelligence and creative spirit and join us at MPD!
We are seeking an experienced Radar Signal Processing Engineer with data fusion and target tracking expertise in the Radar and Signal Systems Department for the Sensing and Processing Subdivision within MPD. This group comprises a diverse set of highly respected engineers and scientists, who provide matrix support to a variety of government space programs of national importance. The department utilizes engineering judgment, knowledge of current technology and national systems to advise customers, such as the United States Space Force, National Reconnaissance Office, and variety of Civil and Commercial organizations, on technical matters relating to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) remote sensing. Technical challenges cover a broad range of disciplines including antennas, the entire transmit and receive chain, radar system modeling, ground moving target identification, electronic warfare, maritime surveillance, image processing, algorithm development for advanced SAR image products and exploitation.
The selected candidate will be required to work hybrid (4 days on-site) at our El Segundo location.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Providing expertise in the areas of radar moving target indication, SIGINT and EO system modeling and target tracking; work may involve system level analysis such as signal propagation, system performance, requirements development and review
  • Moving target indication target tracking experience with an emphasis on air moving targets
  • Developing unique solutions and efficient implementations of signal processing algorithms and data fusion (SAR/SIGINT) for challenging mission applications
  • Evaluate maritime surveillance, and electronic warfare applications
  • Model and evaluate the performance of radar imaging, SIGINT detection and data fusion tracking applications for ground and space-based radar/SIGINT systems to support program planning, acquisition, and operations
