What Does a Radar Engineer Do?
A radar engineer works to design, enhance, or test the accuracy of radar systems. In this career, your duties vary depending on the industry. You may develop radar for weather forecast or tracking purposes, or you could work for the military or a private company in the defense industry. Regardless of your employer, your responsibilities as a radar engineer focus on the technical aspects of a radar system, such as testing of sensor instrument devices or the creation of an algorithm to continuously ensure accuracy and give users control of how they view the system’s data.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Radar Engineer, and why are they important?
What are some typical challenges Radar Engineers face when working on new radar system designs?
What is the difference between Radar Engineer vs RF Engineer?
| Aspect | Radar Engineer | RF Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering, specialized training in radar systems | Bachelor's or higher in Electrical or Electronics Engineering, RF design certifications |
| Work Environment | Defense, aerospace, military, or research labs | Telecommunications, wireless, consumer electronics industries |
| Industry Usage | Design and development of radar systems and sensors | Design and testing of radio frequency components and systems |
Radar Engineers focus on designing and developing radar systems used in defense, aerospace, and research. RF Engineers work on radio frequency components for wireless and communication devices. While both roles require knowledge of RF principles, Radar Engineers specialize in radar-specific technologies, whereas RF Engineers have a broader focus on RF systems across various industries.

Summary This role is central to ensuring that radar construction and installation activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved designs, schedules, and quality standards. The Construction Manager will serve as the on-site authority responsible for managing radar installation teams, coordinating subcontractors, and interfacing with FAA facility personnel, engineering teams, and system integrators. The Construction Manager will provide day-to-day oversight of site construction activities, ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements, resolve field issues, and support successful installation, commissioning, and acceptance of radar systems.
This position requires strong field leadership, construction management expertise, and the ability to manage projects under a compressed, nationwide deployment schedule. * Monitor construction progress, identify issues or risks, and implement corrective actions to minimize schedule impacts. * Review construction work for quality and completeness, ensuring installations meet technical, contractual, and acceptance requirements. * Support site readiness activities, including site surveys, construction planning, and pre-installation coordination.
* Document construction progress, issues, and resolutions through daily reports, field logs, and status updates. * Support installation testing, commissioning, and system acceptance activities, resolving construction-related discrepancies as required. Required Qualifications * 5+ years experience in construction management or field supervision for large-scale technical or infrastructure deployment projects.
* Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience. * Experience overseeing installation teams and subcontractors at active construction or technical sites. * Strong knowledge of construction safety practices and regulatory compliance requirements.
* Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, site plans, and technical installation documentation. * Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively across field teams, engineers, and customer stakeholders. * Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced, field-based environment.
* Willingness and ability to travel extensively to FAA sites nationwide. * US Citizenship to successfully complete a government investigation. Preferred Qualifications * Experience supporting FAA programs, air traffic management systems, or federal infrastructure modernization efforts.
* Prior experience with radar systems, communications systems, or other complex technical installations. * Experience managing construction activities at operational or mission-critical facilities. * Familiarity with FAA facilities, NAS infrastructure, or regulated aviation environments.
* OSHA safety certification or equivalent construction safety training. * Experience supporting multi-site deployment programs with parallel execution schedules. We invest in the lives of our employees, both in and out of the workplace, by providing competitive pay and benefits packages.
