Position Summary... What you'll do...Role summary:
We are seeking a Sr. Manager (IC), Data Science - Last Mile Optimization professional who brings deep expertise in ML and operations research methods to solve large scale forecasting and logistics optimization problems. This role requires expertise in statistical methods and programming languages such as Python, R, and CPLEX to develop scalable models that optimize business operations. Strong communication (written and oral) and cross functional leadership skills are essential to influence stakeholders and guide data science projects from conception through implementation.
About the team:
The Last-Mile Delivery team at Walmart develops advanced systems integrating real-time data, artificial intelligence, and scalable platforms to enhance delivery operations. Spark Driver, the largest last-mile network, covers all 50 states and reaches over 94% of U.S. households, supporting Walmart’s eCommerce expansion through efficient and flexible fulfillment. The team focuses on solving complex forecasting and logistics challenges using machine learning and operations research techniques. This role requires expertise in data science to drive innovation and optimize last-mile delivery performance, contributing significantly to Walmart’s supply chain excellence and customer satisfaction.
What you'll do:
  • Develop end-to-end operations decision optimization engine that balances supply and demand while optimizing cost to serve and service level.
  • Develop predictive simulation and scenario evaluation capabilities to evaluate the optimal supply vs. demand shaping strategies for holidays, Q4 peak, and weather events.
  • Evaluate proposed business cases for projects and initiatives.
  • Clearly communicate technical approaches with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Identify and review model evaluation metrics based on analytical requirements.
  • Utilize programming languages such as Python, R, CPLEX and SQL to analyze large datasets and optimize algorithms.
  • Mentor and guide data science professionals to foster technical growth and project excellence.

What you'll bring:
  • PhD (or Master) in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field.
  • Experience in publications at top-tier conferences or journals
  • 8+ years of building optimization / operations research algorithms and machine learning models for supply chain and logistics applications
  • 8+ years of mathematics optimization such as linear programming and nonlinear optimization experience
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences. Experiences with presenting to senior leadership.
  • Extensive experience in data science with strong proficiency in Python, CPLEX, R, and SQL programming languages.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage data science projects, leveraging operations research and applied science principles.
