How much do quantum programmer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for quantum programmer in the United States is $39.54, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $25.72 and $51.44 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What can I do with quantum programming?

Quantum programmers develop algorithms and software for quantum computers, enabling tasks such as optimization, cryptography, and simulation of quantum systems. They work with quantum programming languages like Qiskit or Cirq and often collaborate with researchers to improve quantum hardware and software capabilities.

Is quantum computing well paying?

Quantum programmers typically earn high salaries due to the specialized skills required, such as knowledge of quantum algorithms, programming languages like Qiskit or Cirq, and experience with quantum hardware. Salaries can vary based on experience, location, and industry, but overall, roles in quantum computing tend to be well compensated compared to many other tech positions.

Will AI replace quantum computing?

Quantum programmers develop algorithms and software for quantum computers, which are specialized hardware designed to perform complex calculations beyond classical computers. AI and quantum computing are complementary technologies; AI can be used to optimize quantum algorithms, but AI alone is unlikely to replace the need for quantum hardware or the expertise of quantum programmers. Both fields are advancing independently and collaboratively to solve different types of problems.

What is a quantum programmer?

A quantum programmer is a professional who develops software to run on quantum computers, often using specialized programming languages like Qiskit or Cirq. They design algorithms that leverage quantum mechanics principles to solve complex problems faster than classical computers. Strong knowledge of quantum physics, programming skills, and familiarity with quantum hardware are essential for this role.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Quantum Programmer?

As a Quantum Programmer, your daily responsibilities may include designing, coding, and testing quantum algorithms using specialized languages and simulators, as well as collaborating closely with physicists, software engineers, and researchers to define computational problems and refine solutions. You might also translate classical algorithms into quantum equivalents, optimize quantum circuits for hardware constraints, and document your code for reproducibility. Additionally, staying updated on rapid advancements in quantum computing and troubleshooting experimental results are key parts of the role. These tasks create a dynamic work environment that blends theoretical exploration with hands-on development and teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Quantum Programmer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quantum Programmer, you need a strong background in quantum mechanics, linear algebra, and classical programming, often supported by a degree in physics, computer science, or a closely related field. Familiarity with quantum programming languages like Qiskit, Cirq, or Q#, as well as access to quantum development platforms and possibly certifications in quantum technologies, is highly beneficial. Critical thinking, collaboration, and strong problem-solving skills are valuable soft skills for tackling complex technical challenges and working in multidisciplinary teams. These skills are important to effectively design, implement, and optimize algorithms for emerging quantum computing systems in both research and commercial settings.

What is a Quantum Programmer job?

A Quantum Programmer is a software developer specializing in writing and optimizing algorithms for quantum computers. They work with quantum programming languages like Qiskit, Cirq, or Q# to develop applications in areas such as cryptography, optimization, and machine learning. Their job involves understanding quantum mechanics principles and implementing quantum algorithms that leverage superposition and entanglement for computational advantages. Many Quantum Programmers collaborate with physicists, engineers, and researchers to advance quantum computing technologies.

Job description

As a Quantum Engineer at Rigetti Computing, you will be a key contributor to the development of our gate-based, superconducting quantum computers. Your work will turn experimental ideas into ever-improving hardware functionality through rigorous characterization of qubits and gates, implementation of new measurement techniques, and interpretation of processor data. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams spanning device design, cryogenic/microwave hardware, control systems, fabrication, and software to push the boundaries of quantum computing to the scale and performance required for practical quantum computing and error correction.

This is a general job posting for experimental physicists that leads to consideration for a targeted role with a specific focus. Topics could include: gate calibration, qubit relaxation and/or dephasing, piloting new research ideas in small processors, integration of new ideas into large processors, or implementation of quantum error correction.

Your training and achievements as an experimental physicist in quantum information mean that you, more than anyone else, already know how hard this will be. And thatโ€™s why youโ€™ve sought us out.

Key Responsibilities
  • Characterizing experimental devices, assessing their performance, identifying areas for improvement, and providing feedback to internal development teams.

  • Providing technical focus and leadership on a particular R&D topic, which could include gate calibration, qubit relaxation and/or dephasing, piloting new research ideas in small processors, integration of new ideas into large processors, or implementation of quantum error correction.

  • Collaborating across diverse teams of expert engineers (fab, design, electronics, software, etc.) to turn experimental concepts into robust technologies that work at large QPU scales.

  • Staying current with cutting-edge research, synthesizing results from the literature, and implementing state-of-the-art calibration, error diagnostic, and system optimization techniques to enhance device performance.

Required Qualifications
  • PhD in Physics or similar applied scientific field, or Mastersโ€™ in Physics with 2+ years relevant industry experience.

  • Demonstrated abilities in experimental problem solving and experimental research.

  • Expertise in the practical implementation of coherent quantum effects and control.

  • Proficiency using Python in a scientific context.

  • Ability to thrive in a strongly collaborative environment, with a team-first mindset.

  • Excellent communication skills.

Nice to Have
  • Experience calibrating and characterizing single- and two-qubit quantum gates in superconducting quantum devices.

  • Experience utilizing quantum simulation frameworks, such as QuTip.

  • Proven capability to execute and effectively communicate outcomes from innovative research and development initiatives.

  • Software development experience in a collaborative industry setting.

  • Previous technical role in an industrial or startup setting.

Base Salary
