How much do quantum programmer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for quantum programmer in California is $39.02, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $25.38 and $50.77 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What can I do with quantum programming?

Quantum programmers develop algorithms and software for quantum computers, enabling tasks such as optimization, cryptography, and simulation of quantum systems. They work with quantum programming languages like Qiskit or Cirq and often collaborate with researchers to improve quantum hardware and software capabilities.

Is quantum computing well paying?

Quantum programmers typically earn high salaries due to the specialized skills required, such as knowledge of quantum algorithms, programming languages like Qiskit or Cirq, and experience with quantum hardware. Salaries can vary based on experience, location, and industry, but overall, roles in quantum computing tend to be well compensated compared to many other tech positions.

Will AI replace quantum computing?

Quantum programmers develop algorithms and software for quantum computers, which are specialized hardware designed to perform complex calculations beyond classical computers. AI and quantum computing are complementary technologies; AI can be used to optimize quantum algorithms, but AI alone is unlikely to replace the need for quantum hardware or the expertise of quantum programmers. Both fields are advancing independently and collaboratively to solve different types of problems.

What is a quantum programmer?

A quantum programmer is a professional who develops software to run on quantum computers, often using specialized programming languages like Qiskit or Cirq. They design algorithms that leverage quantum mechanics principles to solve complex problems faster than classical computers. Strong knowledge of quantum physics, programming skills, and familiarity with quantum hardware are essential for this role.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Quantum Programmer?

As a Quantum Programmer, your daily responsibilities may include designing, coding, and testing quantum algorithms using specialized languages and simulators, as well as collaborating closely with physicists, software engineers, and researchers to define computational problems and refine solutions. You might also translate classical algorithms into quantum equivalents, optimize quantum circuits for hardware constraints, and document your code for reproducibility. Additionally, staying updated on rapid advancements in quantum computing and troubleshooting experimental results are key parts of the role. These tasks create a dynamic work environment that blends theoretical exploration with hands-on development and teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Quantum Programmer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quantum Programmer, you need a strong background in quantum mechanics, linear algebra, and classical programming, often supported by a degree in physics, computer science, or a closely related field. Familiarity with quantum programming languages like Qiskit, Cirq, or Q#, as well as access to quantum development platforms and possibly certifications in quantum technologies, is highly beneficial. Critical thinking, collaboration, and strong problem-solving skills are valuable soft skills for tackling complex technical challenges and working in multidisciplinary teams. These skills are important to effectively design, implement, and optimize algorithms for emerging quantum computing systems in both research and commercial settings.

What is a Quantum Programmer job?

Job description

At Cadence, we hire and develop leaders and innovators who want to make an impact on the world of technology.

The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in quantum engineering, specifically in working with cross-functional teams to develop integrated Quantum Design Automation solutions.

Responsibilities include understanding system-level quantum specifications and being able to map them to circuit simulations (classical and quantum), understanding quantum IC layout implementation, and conducting analysis and characterization targeted at superconducting quantum hardware using industry-standard software platforms such as Virtuoso, Spectre, and Clarity.

The role requires exceptional communication skills for effective collaboration internally and direct engagement with end-users. While a PhD in quantum engineering or a related field is highly valued, equivalent industry experience is also considered. The candidate should demonstrate strong motivation and a passion for advancing quantum technologies. Familiarity with alternative quantum hardware modalities, including neutral atoms, trapped ions, and photonic systems, is advantageous.

The annual salary range for California is $154,000 to $286,000. You may also be eligible to receive incentive compensation: bonus, equity, and benefits. Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure. Please note that the salary range is a guideline and compensation may vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies and work location. Our benefits programs include: paid vacation and paid holidays, 401(k) plan with employer match, employee stock purchase plan, a variety of medical, dental and vision plan options, and more.
