What are Quantum Electrical Engineers?

Quantum Electrical Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test electronic systems and devices that operate based on quantum mechanical principles. They work on technologies such as quantum computers, quantum sensors, and quantum communication systems, integrating quantum theory with electrical engineering. Their work often involves research and development in both hardware and software to advance emerging quantum technologies.

What is the difference between Quantum Electrical Engineer vs Quantum Hardware Engineer?

AspectQuantum Electrical EngineerQuantum Hardware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related fields; knowledge of quantum electronicsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related fields; focus on hardware design
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, industry R&DLaboratories, manufacturing facilities, research institutions
Employer & Industry UsageQuantum computing companies, tech firms, research institutionsQuantum hardware startups, research labs, semiconductor companies

Both roles often require similar educational backgrounds and work in related environments, but Quantum Electrical Engineers focus more on electronic components and circuit design for quantum systems, while Quantum Hardware Engineers concentrate on building and testing quantum devices and hardware components.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Quantum Electrical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quantum Electrical Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, quantum mechanics, and advanced mathematics, typically supported by a relevant degree such as a master's or PhD. Experience with quantum simulation software, cryogenic systems, and laboratory instrumentation, along with familiarity with programming languages like Python or MATLAB, is highly valued. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and strong teamwork and communication skills help professionals excel in this multidisciplinary field. These competencies are crucial for advancing quantum technology research and development, ensuring innovation and practical implementation in this cutting-edge industry.

How does a Quantum Electrical Engineer typically collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on quantum technology projects?

Quantum Electrical Engineers frequently work alongside physicists, software engineers, and materials scientists to design and optimize quantum devices and systems. Collaboration is key, as these engineers integrate electrical engineering principles with quantum mechanics, ensuring that hardware meets the stringent requirements for quantum coherence and signal integrity. Regular team meetings, joint troubleshooting sessions, and cross-functional project planning are common, enabling efficient progress from initial design through to experimental validation and scaling. Such teamwork helps bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical, scalable quantum technology.

Job description

Join our fast-paced and passionate team as an Electrical Engineer 3. As we scale, you will be instrumental in building our foundation from the ground up. This is a dynamic, hands-on role for a self-starter who thrives in a fluid startup environment. You'll have the opportunity to work on cutting edge technologies, work closely with leadership, and develop and implement engineering practices that support our mission and growth. Your key responsibilities are as follows:
  • Work independently and in a team while over communicating with the manager, project engineer and the teammates. Will mentor junior engineers.
  • Execute complex engineering tasks involving planning, preparation, data/information collection and analysis and decision-making in a process involving peer reviews and documentation of the results.
  • Use tenacity, patience, self-discipline and passion for excellence to assure accuracy of execution schedule, data quality/integrity, conformance to company best practices, clarity in communication and documentation.
  • Use every opportunity to grow competency thru mentorship, curiosity, communication, exposure and initiative.
  • Responsible for working independently and with a group of engineers on electrical designs.
  • Design, develop, analyze, document and support testing of products, systems or subsystems.
  • Documentation of design architecture and formal design synthesis including analysis of design performance parameters.
  • Modeling and simulation of performance of electrical circuits.
  • Electrical schematic capture and BOM maintenance.
  • PCB layout and production of PCB cam files.
  • Testing and diagnosis of designs and verification of design goals.
  • Participate in failure root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop prototypes to retire key development risks.
  • Prepare test plans to support test implementation and reporting.

Requirements
  • This position requires access to export-controlled information. Employment is contingent upon the applicant being a U.S. person as defined by 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3).

Experience:
  • A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, ECE, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, ideally within a startup or technology company.
  • Experience in analog circuit design, ADC/DAC, DC-DC convertors and controllers.
  • Design experience with RF components a plus.
  • RF Layout experience a plus.
  • Experience with low noise circuit design and testing a plus.
  • Experience using Altium Designer a plus.

Skills:
  • Solid understanding of analog and mixed-signal circuit designs.
  • Ability to design electrical schematics including development of circuit architecture and component selection to meet requirements for the system.
  • Ability to use simulation tools such as SPICE for analyzing circuit performance.
  • Knowledge of components available from key vendors which could be utilized to implement circuit design.

Startup Mindset:
  • You're creative, flexible, and eager to wear multiple hats.
  • You're passionate about building systems from the ground up and comfortable with ambiguity and change.

Benefits
The expected annual salary range for this position is $125,000-$175,000.
As a full-time employee, you will be eligible for Monarch's comprehensive benefits package, which includes:
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance
  • Fidelity 401(k) plan with 4% employer matching
  • 20 paid time off (PTO) days per year
  • 13 paid company holidays
