About the role
D-Wave is seeking a talented and self-motivated Staff Quantum error correction (QEC) theorist to join our gate-model Quantum Engineering team. In this role, you will help lead novel error correction research and development that will push the boundaries of QEC and fault-tolerant computing using our dual-rail cavity qubit architecture. This is a senior role requiring both significant technical contributors and leadership expectations to have significant impact in shaping our technology roadmap. This position is ideal for researchers with a strong foundation in error correction and who also enjoy close scientific collaboration with experimental physicists and engineering teams.
What you'll do
  • Define and lead research programs in QEC tailored for dual-rail erasure qubits in areas like code design, logical operations, decoder design, and resource estimation
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with hardware, control, compiler, and architecture teams to co-design error correction schemes with device constraints and connectivity in mind
  • Set technical direction for a team of researchers: scope projects, establish milestones, review work, and drive research from open question to actionable result
  • Mentor and grow junior scientists and interns and contribute to building a world-class QEC theory team
  • Advise wider team on the fault-tolerance roadmap, including logical qubit milestones, overhead projections, and trade-offs between architectural options
  • Contribute meaningfully to D-wave's roadmap to realize fault-tolerant quantum computation with the dual-rail architecture

About You
  • Ph.D. (or equivalent experience) in quantum computing, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or relevant specialization and 4+ years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated research track record in QEC codes, fault-tolerant protocols, and/or QEC simulations/modeling
  • Proficiency in scientific programming (Python, Rust, Julia, MATLAB, C, C++ or similar)
  • Demonstrated experience leading research projects end-to-end and mentoring more junior researchers
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills especially with working in interdisciplinary teams with professionals from other fields of physics and engineering
  • Excellent communication skills: able to explain deep theoretical results and broader implications to a cross-functional audience
