In 1984, the University of Rochester was among the first medical schools to create a formal Division of Medical Humanities & Bioethics as a natural outgrowth of the school's signature biopsychosocial model to solidify the presence of the humanities in the medical school curriculum. In December 2021, the Division became a formal department of Health Humanities and Bioethics (HHBE) with the aim to become nationally recognized for active engagement and contributions to the advancement of ethical, just, and humanistic health care, and for education and training in health humanities and bioethics.

The faculty engage in scholarship, clinical and community service, and the teaching of graduate students, medical students and other trainees in the health professions.
