How much do quant developer jobs pay per year?
What is a quant developer?
A Quant Developer (Quantitative Developer) is a software engineer who builds and maintains financial models, trading systems, and analytical tools for quantitative analysts and traders. They use programming languages like Python, C++, or Java to develop algorithms that automate trading strategies, risk analysis, and data processing. Quant Developers typically work in hedge funds, investment banks, or proprietary trading firms, collaborating with quants and portfolio managers to optimize trading performance. Strong mathematical skills, proficiency in financial markets, and expertise in software development are essential for this role.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quant developer?
To thrive as a Quant Developer, you need advanced programming skills (often in Python, C++, or Java), a strong foundation in mathematics or statistics, and a relevant degree such as in computer science, engineering, or quantitative finance. Expertise in numerical libraries, version control systems like Git, and familiarity with financial modeling tools or industry data feeds is highly valuable. Collaboration, strong analytical thinking, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are critical soft skills for this role. These capabilities are essential for designing robust quantitative models and working effectively with cross-functional teams in fast-paced financial environments.
What are some typical challenges quant developers face in their daily work?
Quant developers often work with large, complex datasets and real-time data streams, which can present technical challenges related to performance, accuracy, and scalability. They may need to continuously adapt to changing market requirements or new financial regulations, requiring staying up to date and learning new tools or methods. Collaboration with quants, traders, and other stakeholders is common, so balancing technical problem-solving with effective communication is also important. These challenges make the role both demanding and intellectually rewarding for those passionate about technology and finance.

The Role:
Director, Quant Data Platform
You will lead the dataset onboarding efforts for the Quantitative Research Platform (QRP) team within Fidelity's Quantitative Research & Investments (QRI) division. In this role, you will collaborate with technology partners to integrate financial and alternative datasets into QRP, ensuring they meet rigorous standards for quantitative research. You will work closely with researchers to design data consumption patterns and partner with Data Operations to maintain data quality.
The Expertise and Skills You Bring
You bring a strong background in managing and delivering complex data solutions for quantitative research within asset management. You have experience accelerating dataset onboarding processes while maintaining sustainability and quality, and you excel at collaborating with technology partners and researchers to design intuitive data consumption patterns. Your ability to coach teams, improve documentation, and maintain best practices in project management demonstrates your leadership and commitment to operational excellence. You are highly analytical, able to navigate complex data challenges, and communicate effectively with both technical and investment stakeholders.
Your technical proficiency includes SQL and Python, combined with a deep understanding of quantitative datasets ranging from traditional financial data such as prices, returns, fundamentals, and corporate actions to alternative datasets like sustainability analytics, supply chain, and credit card data. You have hands-on experience with major financial data vendors (Bloomberg, S&P, FactSet, Refinitiv, Morningstar, MSCI) and a strong grasp of point-in-time data modeling, historical reconciliation, and data governance practices. Your track record includes delivering large-scale data projects on time and at quality, with transparency and collaboration across multiple teams.
- 7+ years of experience in asset management or hedge funds, focused on data analysis, delivery, and transformation across asset classes
- Proven ability to lead engineering teams and coach others while contributing individually
- Exposure to a wide array of financial and alternative datasets with deep knowledge of consumption patterns
- Technical proficiency in SQL and Python
- CFA charter holder or progress toward CFA designation is a strong plus
