Job description

IPG Photonics is the world leader in high power fibre lasers for industrial welding, cleaning, and cutting equipment. Our Canadian subsidiary in Kingston, Ontario produces market-disrupting sensor technology and software that is transforming the manufacturing industry.

The Manufacturing Engineering Intern will be a member of the Hardware Engineering department, with a primary focus on the creation of 3D models, drawings, bills of materials, assembly procedures, tooling, quality control test procedures & apparatus, and service documentation for IPG Canada's line of weld quality monitoring systems. They will work closely with assembly, quality control, and field service staff to ensure that all of this material is complete, accurate, and reflects the company's collective experience and best practices. As a secondary focus, this intern will assist in quality assurance processes, supplier qualification, first-article inspection, and root cause analysis of defects noted in production.

This is a 12 month professional intern position from September 2026 to August 2027. This is a full-time, on-site position at our Kingston, Ontario facility.

Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
  • Prepare 3D CAD part and assembly models as directed by senior staff.
  • Use 3D CAD models to produce detailed assembly guides for use by production and service staff.
  • Use 3D CAD models to produce manufacturing / fabrication drawings for use by external suppliers.
  • Maintain accurate bill of materials files, and keep them up to date during design revisions.
  • Participate in mechanical & manufacturing design reviews.
  • Draft and edit work instructions, assembly procedures, and quality control procedures.
  • Design and assemble quality control and testing apparatus for use on the production line.
  • Assist with inspecting and qualifying new parts from new suppliers.
  • Assist with analysis of defects and their root causes in production.

This 12-month internship is open to students at CEAB-accredited engineering schools who meet the following requirements:

  • Completed 3rd year of a 4- or 5-year university engineering degree (B.Sc.E / B.Eng) in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field
  • Well-organized and able to operate independently to accomplish day-to-day tasks with minimal direct supervision.
  • Strong professional communication skills in the English language are essential.
  • Skilled in 3D parametric CAD modelling (SolidWorks preferred, but experience in Inventor, Catia, SolidEdge, etc. is equally valid)
  • Skilled in Microsoft Excel & Word
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Proficiency in any other language from this list is not required but may be an asset: Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, German, Italian, French, Polish.
