What is a quality control CMM inspector?

Quality Control CMM Inspectors are professionals who use Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) to ensure that manufactured parts and products meet precise specifications and quality standards. They set up and operate CMM equipment to measure the dimensions and features of components, comparing them to engineering drawings and tolerances. These inspectors play a crucial role in quality assurance by identifying defects, maintaining detailed inspection records, and supporting continuous improvement in manufacturing processes.

How does a quality control CMM inspector typically collaborate with other departments during the inspection process?

A Quality Control CMM Inspector frequently works closely with manufacturing, engineering, and quality assurance teams to ensure that components meet precise specifications. Inspectors often communicate their findings, such as dimensional discrepancies or process issues, to engineers and production supervisors, enabling quick resolution and continuous improvement. This collaborative approach helps maintain product quality, streamline workflows, and prevent costly errors. Regular meetings and clear documentation are common practices to ensure everyone stays informed and aligned.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quality control CMM inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quality Control CMM Inspector, you need a solid understanding of precision measurement, blueprint reading, and quality assurance principles, often supported by relevant technical training or certifications. Proficiency with Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), software such as PC-DMIS or Calypso, and familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) standards are typical requirements. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help inspectors identify defects and interact effectively with production teams. These skills ensure accurate inspections, compliance with specifications, and the delivery of high-quality products.

What is the difference between Quality Control Cmm Inspector vs Quality Control Inspector?

AspectQuality Control Cmm InspectorQuality Control Inspector
CertificationsOften requires CMM programming and inspection certificationsTypically requires general quality inspection certifications
Work EnvironmentPrimarily in manufacturing or machining facilities, using CMM machinesIn various industries, inspecting products, parts, or assemblies
ResponsibilitiesMeasuring parts with Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), ensuring dimensional accuracyPerforming visual and dimensional inspections, documenting quality issues

The main difference is that a Quality Control Cmm Inspector specializes in using CMM equipment to perform precise measurements, while a Quality Control Inspector may perform a broader range of inspection tasks. Both roles are essential in manufacturing, but the CMM Inspector focuses more on advanced measurement techniques and equipment.

Job Description

This role focuses on ensuring the dimensional accuracy and quality of manufactured components through manual and CMM inspection, assembly verification, and detailed documentation. You will support project management, internal and external vendors, and inventory management processes while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives in a manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform dimensional inspection of manufactured components using manual inspection tools, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and assembly verification against engineering drawings.
  • Physically assemble components as needed to verify fit, function, and compliance with engineering specifications.
  • Wrap manufactured components, tag them appropriately, and gather all related items for final verification and processing.
  • Document all manufactured parts that fail inspection, prepare non-conforming reports in Excel, and provide disposition to engineering and project management.
  • Assist the project management department with specialty applications and quality-related support throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support internal and external vendors with the manufacturing of designed components by performing in-process inspections as needed.
  • Use ERP software to receive manufactured parts into stock through work orders, record labor time, and review work orders for accuracy.
  • Assist project management with verifying that all physical components are correctly allocated and accounted for on picklists.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to inventory management, quality processes, and lean principles.
  • Assist with training new employees on inspection methods, documentation practices, and quality standards.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned to support manufacturing, quality assurance, and project execution.

  • 2–3+ years of experience working as a quality technician or in a closely related quality inspection role.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment, preferably in a machine shop setting.
  • Hands-on experience running and programming a CMM, including use of Calypso or similar CMM programming software.
  • Proficiency using precision measurement tools such as calipers, tape measures, micrometers, volt meters, and oscilloscopes.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with an understanding of how mechanical systems and components function.
  • Knowledge of quality control processes, quality assurance practices, and lean principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and schematics.
  • Experience documenting non-conforming reports (NCRs) in Excel or similar tools.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience with machining environments, including familiarity with CNC equipment, lathes, mills, and assembly processes.
  • Solid understanding of quality inspection and metrology methods and equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience using ERP systems to put items into inventory through work orders and to manage stock transactions.
  • Extensive knowledge of metrology methods and advanced measurement equipment.
  • Experience working in a machine shop environment with close collaboration between machining and quality teams.
  • Participation in continuous improvement initiatives focused on inventory management, process efficiency, and waste reduction.

Work Environment

You will work in a manufacturing and machine shop environment that focuses on precision machining, quality control, and assembly of engineered components. The role involves regular use of CMMs, precision measurement tools, and metrology equipment, as well as computers with ERP and Microsoft Office software for documentation and inventory tasks. Work is typically performed in a production facility with active machinery, inspection stations, and assembly areas, requiring attention to safety procedures and comfortable use of standard industrial tools and equipment.
