Overview

Black Canyon Consulting (BCC) is searching for a QA Engineer to support the delivery and modernization of mission-critical, web-based digital resources for a federal government client. This role will play a critical part in ensuring the quality, reliability, and backward compatibility of a modernized, enterprise-scale platform.

The QA Engineer will work closely with Product, Business Analysts (BAs), Engineers, User Experience (UX), and client stakeholders to validate requirements, define test strategies, and ensure new functionality meets both user expectations and feature parity with the legacy system. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset, as well as hands-on experience with automated and manual testing in Agile environments.

This position is focused on automated quality engineering. The ideal candidate should have extensive hands-on experience designing, developing, and maintaining automated test frameworks and suites for modern web applications. Experience with Playwright using TypeScript is required. While manual testing is expected as needed, the primary focus of this role is building and maintaining automated test coverage in an Agile environment.

 Duties & Responsibilities:

Job Responsibilities

Quality Strategy and Test Planning

  • Develop and execute test strategies and test plans for complex, data-driven applications
  • Ensure backward compatibility and functional parity with the legacy system
  • Analyze requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria to identify gaps, risks, and ambiguities
  • Partner with Product and BAs to clarify requirements and expected behavior
  • Identify edge cases, regression risks, and impacts across integrated systems

Test Automation and Quality Engineering

  • Develop, maintain, and execute robust automated test suites using Playwright and TypeScript
  • Build end-to-end, regression, integration, and smoke tests that support continuous delivery
  • Validate application programming interface (API) integrations and data flows between frontend and backend systems
  • Compare legacy and modern system behavior to ensure consistent outcomes
  • Track, document, and verify defect resolution
  • Integrate automated tests into Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery/Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines
  • Improve test coverage, test reliability, and testing processes over time
  • Contribute to improving QA standards, tools, and best practices across the program

Agile Collaboration and Delivery

  • Actively participate in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, reviews, and retrospectives
  • Collaborate closely with Frontend and Backend Engineers during development and testing
  • Provide early and continuous feedback to help teams build quality into the product
  • Support release validation and readiness activities
  • Assist with troubleshooting production and pre-production issues as needed
Required skills and experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of experience in automated testing for web-based or enterprise applications
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience developing automated tests using Playwright with TypeScript in a production environment
  • Experience testing complex, data-driven systems
  • Strong experience with manual and automated testing
  • Experience validating requirements and identifying gaps early in the development lifecycle
  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Clearance and Location Requirements

    • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
    • Must reside in and be authorized to work in the United States; candidates in the DMV area preferred
