Job description

Job Title: Carpenter

About the Role:

As a Carpenter specializing in concrete formwork, you will play a critical role in constructing, installing, maintaining, and removing form systems for FDOT roadway, bridge, and transportation infrastructure projects. Your work will support the placement of concrete for structures such as bridge components, traffic barriers, retaining walls, drainage structures, sidewalks, foundations, and other concrete elements. You will interpret FDOT plans, construction drawings, specifications, and layout information to ensure forms are built to the required dimensions, lines, grades, and elevations. This role requires strong attention to detail, physical stamina, and the ability to work safely with hand tools, power tools, formwork systems, and heavy materials. Ultimately, your craftsmanship will directly contribute to the structural integrity, accuracy, safety, and successful completion of FDOT construction projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Proven experience as a carpenter performing concrete formwork or structural carpentry.
 • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, drawings, dimensions, and specifications accurately.
 • Proficiency in using hand and power tools safely and effectively.
 • Ability to measure, cut, assemble, brace, install, and remove concrete forms.
 • Physical ability to perform heavy lifting and work outdoors in varying weather, terrain, and traffic conditions.
 • Strong understanding of formwork materials, carpentry techniques, and construction safety requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Carpentry apprenticeship, trade certification, or equivalent construction training.
 • Experience performing formwork on FDOT, highway, bridge, or other heavy civil construction projects.
 • Experience with wood, steel, aluminum, modular, and proprietary formwork systems.
 • Familiarity with FDOT plans, specifications, quality requirements, and construction standards.
 • Knowledge of concrete placement procedures, form release agents, bracing systems, ties, chamfers, and embedded items.
 • Ability to work independently and as part of a crew in fast-paced construction environments.

Responsibilities:

• Read and interpret FDOT plans, drawings, specifications, and layout information to determine formwork requirements.
 • Measure, cut, shape, assemble, install, brace, and remove concrete forms using hand and power tools.
 • Construct formwork for bridge components, traffic barriers, retaining walls, drainage structures, sidewalks, foundations, and other concrete elements.
 • Set forms to the required dimensions, alignment, line, grade, and elevation in coordination with supervisors and survey personnel.
 • Install form ties, braces, supports, chamfer strips, blackouts, bulkheads, and embedded items as required.
 • Inspect forms before concrete placement to confirm they are secure, properly aligned, clean, and ready for use.
 • Monitor formwork during concrete placement and make adjustments or repairs when necessary.
 • Strip, clean, repair, organize, and store formwork materials for reuse.
 • Collaborate with concrete crews, equipment operators, laborers, supervisors, inspectors, and other project personnel to complete work safely and on schedule.
 • Maintain a clean and safe work area while following company safety policies, project-specific requirements, and applicable FDOT and OSHA regulations.
 • Perform heavy lifting, climbing, bending, kneeling, and other physically demanding tasks required by the project.
 • Inspect and repair damaged forms, braces, and related components to maintain safety, accuracy, and functionality.

Skills:

The required skills, including plan reading, formwork carpentry, and accurate measurement, are essential for constructing concrete forms that meet FDOT project dimensions, lines, grades, and elevations. Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, levels, measuring equipment, and formwork systems enables safe and efficient construction, installation, adjustment, and removal of forms. Depth perception, peripheral vision, and attention to detail are critical when cutting materials, aligning forms, installing bracing, and working near equipment or active traffic. Heavy lifting, physical stamina, balance, and coordination are necessary to handle formwork materials and equipment throughout the workday. Knowledge of concrete placement, bracing, ties, chamfers, blackouts, and embedded items helps ensure finished concrete structures meet applicable plans, specifications, and quality requirements.
