How much do qc piping jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 5, 2026, the average hourly pay for qc piping in the United States is $51.62, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $42.31 and $61.30 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a QC Piping Inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as a QC Piping Inspector, you need a solid understanding of piping systems, welding processes, and industry codes such as ASME or API, often backed by a technical diploma or relevant certification. Familiarity with inspection tools, non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, and documentation systems like inspection reports is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help ensure adherence to quality standards and effective coordination with project teams. These skills are critical for ensuring the safety, reliability, and compliance of piping installations in industrial settings.

What are QC Piping inspectors?

QC Piping inspectors are quality control professionals who ensure that piping systems in construction, manufacturing, or industrial projects meet established codes, standards, and client specifications. They inspect materials, welding, installation, and documentation to identify and prevent defects or non-conformities. Their role is crucial in industries such as oil and gas, power plants, and chemical processing, where piping system integrity is critical for safety and operational efficiency. QC Piping inspectors also write inspection reports and may witness various tests to verify compliance.

What is the difference between Qc Piping vs Pipe Fitter?

AspectQc PipingPipe Fitter
CertificationsASME, API, welding certificationsWelding, safety, and pipefitting certifications
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, refineries, manufacturing facilitiesConstruction sites, industrial plants, shipyards
ResponsibilitiesInspecting, testing, ensuring piping quality and complianceInstalling, assembling, and repairing piping systems

Both Qc Piping and Pipe Fitters work in industrial environments involving piping systems. While Pipe Fitters focus on installation and assembly, Qc Piping specialists ensure the quality, safety, and compliance of piping work through inspections and testing. Understanding these roles helps employers and job seekers identify the right career path or hiring needs.

What are the typical challenges faced by a QC Piping Engineer during project execution?

QC Piping Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring compliance with stringent quality standards while managing tight project timelines. Coordinating inspections, resolving non-conformities, and maintaining thorough documentation require attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Additionally, effective communication is essential as the role involves close collaboration with construction teams, welding inspectors, and project managers to address issues promptly and keep the project on track. Adapting to evolving site conditions and balancing multiple priorities are also common aspects of the job.

Job description

Overview

The QA/QC Engineer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing quality assurance and quality control programs for the construction of Chemical Distribution System (CDS), gas cabinets, and associated high-purity piping used in a high-volume semiconductor manufacturing facility. The primary goal is to ensure the purity, integrity, and reliable operation of the chemical and gas infrastructure to prevent contamination and maintain high product yield.

Key Responsibilities

1. Quality Assurance (QA) and Documentation

  • Develop, revise, and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS) documents specific to CDS, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Work Instructions (WIs), and Quality Checklists.
  • Ensure all installation, testing, and commissioning activities for CDS and piping comply with industry standards (e.g., SEMI, ASTM), client specifications, and local regulations.
  • Manage the Material Traceability program, ensuring all components (valves, pipes, fittings, filters, pumps) used are correctly certified and traceable to their manufacturer and purity specifications.
  • Conduct internal and external audits of contractors and vendors to verify adherence to quality standards and specifications.

2. Quality Control (QC) and Testing

  • Oversee and perform critical QC inspections during all phases of CDS installation, including:
    • Orbital Welding inspection and certification (review of weld logs and NDT reports).
    • Dimensional checks of piping systems and equipment layout.
    • Cleanroom protocol adherence during installation.
  • Manage and witness specialized testing for high-purity systems:
    • Pressure Testing (hydrostatic/pneumatic).
    • Helium Leak Testing to ensure system integrity.
    • Particle Count Testing (e.g., using a non-volatile residue (NVR) test or particle counter) of wetted surfaces to confirm cleanliness .
    • Oxygen and Moisture Analysis of inert gas lines.
  • Review and approve Final Turnover Packages (TOP), including all QC reports, test results, certifications, and as-built drawings, prior to system release.

3. Non-Conformance Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Identify, document, and track all quality non-conformances (NCRs) and material rejections.
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for quality failures or deviations in the CDS.
  • Implement effective Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) to prevent recurrence.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the quality and efficiency of CDS installation and maintenance processes.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum 3-5 years of experience in QA/QC, specifically within high-purity process piping, chemical delivery systems, or similar infrastructure in the semiconductor, pharmaceutical, or ultra-clean manufacturing industries.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of SEMI standards related to chemical and gas delivery (e.g., SEMI F1, F5, F57).
    • Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), and material specifications.
    • Experience with orbital welding quality requirements and inspection.
    • Familiarity with various QC testing methods for clean systems (pressure decay, helium leak, particle counting).
  • Certifications (Preferred): ASQ Certification (e.g., CQE), Welding Inspector Certification (e.g., AWS CWI).

Key Attributes

  • High Attention to Detail: Critical for identifying minute defects in high-purity components.
  • Excellent Communication: Ability to clearly communicate quality requirements and non-conformance issues to engineers, contractors, and management.
  • Safety Conscious: Deep commitment to safety protocols, especially when working with hazardous production materials (HPMs).
