Job description

The Quality Assurance NDT Inspector inspects and non-destructively evaluates materials and products such as fabricated components, castings, structural components, and raw materials to ensure they meet
quality standards.
Applicable NDT disciplines include Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Visual Testing (VT), Liquid Penetrant (LP), Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT), and Radiography Interpretation (RI).
Responsibilities
Trainee:
  • Receive nondestructive training and education to acquire UT Level I certification.
  • Comply with all company and industry safety standards.
  • Become familiar with Ultrasonic principles and practices.
  • Perform ultrasonic testing under supervision of certified NDT inspector.
  • Performs visual inspections per written procedure and engineering prints / specifications.
  • Prepare nonconformance reports for suspect components.
  • Label nonconforming products appropriately.
  • Carries-out assigned tasks according to written, oral, or diagram illustrated instructions.
  • Locate, open, print and review documents and specifications in SharePoint and ERP system.
  • Use measuring and evaluation tools to determine product conformance to specification.

Level 1:
  • Inspect raw materials, welds, WIP and finished products at incoming inspection and throughout the manufacturing process to determine conformance to quality standards and specifications.
  • Initiate, review and manage product testing and inspection records essential to the inspection process.
  • Prepare nonconformance reports for suspect components and provide potential action to address the situation.
  • Performs material and product containments and inventory transfers.
  • Obtain internal (or external) training to perform Visual Weld Inspections.
  • Obtain training, education, and certification to become an ASNT UT Level I and continuously perform Level 1 Inspection duties.

Level II:
  • Determine product conformance according to specified requirement and disposition accordingly.
  • Process First Article Submissions and documentation (PPAP).
  • Initiate Inventory Adjustments for scrap.
  • Inspect rework for acceptance.
  • Communicate quality issues to supervisor.
  • Certified internally to perform Visual Weld Inspections.
  • Obtain training, education, and certification to become an ASNT UT Level II.

Level III:
  • Inspect complex reworked components for acceptance.
  • Communicate major quality issues to supervisor.
  • Review test and inspection documents for conformance and completeness, retain according to documented process.
  • Coordinate within Quality Assurance processes and Business Management System databases.
  • Sustain awareness of ISO 9001 policies and requirements relevant to Quality department's responsibilities and authorities.
  • Perform ASNT UT Level II inspection duties and provide instructions to Trainee and Level 1 inspectors.
  • Pursue training, education, and certification for additional NDT Level III disciplines.

Senior:
  • Issue Engineering Change Requests and red line documents as needed. Control, count, and reduce inventory in your area of responsibility, escalate issues to supervisor.
  • Monitor nonconformance reports and drive dispositions to be made in a timely manner.
  • Produce comprehensive reports regarding an audit, Corrective Action, NR or other.
  • Obtain training, education, and certification for additional NDT Level III certifications.
  • Direct activities, provide technical support for trainees, and Level I, II, & III NDT inspectors.
  • Take ownership of work areas, implement improvements autonomously, escalate issues to management as appropriate.

Competencies
Education and Experience:
  • Trainee: A High School diploma or equivalent. General knowledge of manufacturing processes.
  • Level I: A High School diploma or equivalent. General knowledge of manufacturing processes. Minimum 1 year of experience in manufacturing, preferably performing inspections; or completion of LME NDT Inspector Trainee program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with heavy fabricated materials. Certified CWI preferred.
  • Level II: High School diploma or equivalent. Minimum 2 years of experience in manufacturing preferably performing inspections; or completion of LME NDT Inspector Trainee program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with heavy fabricated materials. Certified CWI preferred.
  • Level III: High School diploma or equivalent. Minimum 4 years of experience in manufacturing preferably performing inspections; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with heavy fabricated materials. Certified UT level I or II inspector. Certified CWI preferred.
  • Senior: High School diploma or equivalent. Minimum eight years' experience as a quality inspector. Certified UT Level III inspector. Certified CWI preferred.

Trainee:
  • Oral Communication: Speaks clearly; Listens, clarifies and responds well to questions.
  • Written Communication: Writes clearly; Able to read, interpret, and provide descriptive written communication.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend technical instructions.
  • Organizational Support: Follows policies and procedures; Completes tasks correctly and on time; Supports organization's goals and values.
  • Quality: Strives to produce error free work; Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Dependability: Follows instructions, responds to management direction.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform mathematical operations, knowledge of basic algebra concepts. Ability to pass LME math knowledge check.
  • Basic computer skills relative to the job (MS Office software).
  • Technical aptitude: Ability to understand the basics of fabrication and mechanics. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, specifications, procedures and blueprints.
  • Ability to pass Jaeger 2 Vision Examination or equivalent.
  • Ability to read and understand basic weld symbols preferred.
  • Practical welding experience and use of hand-held measurements tools (micrometer, caliper, tape measure etc.) is a plus.

Level I:
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to use basic measuring devices such as calipers, micrometers or tape measures required.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Knowledge of standard shop practices.
  • Ability to operate overhead cranes.
  • Ability to perform visual weld inspections.

Level II:
  • Ability to apply basic concepts of geometry related to angles, cylinders and planes.
  • Perform containment inspections and field return inspections.
  • Basic understanding and implementation of LEAN manufacturing initiatives.
  • Experienced in the use of basic measuring devices such as calipers, micrometers or tape measures.
  • Knowledge of MS Office software; Contact Management systems; Internet software.
  • Ability to understand the basics of fabrication, welding, mechanics and raw materials.
  • Prioritizes and plans work activities; Uses time efficiently.
  • Liebherr Certified Visual weld inspector.
  • Certified ASNT UT Level I

Level III:
  • Ability to prioritize job duties as necessary.
  • Ability to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
  • Ability to perform receiving inspection and returns inspection.
  • Adapts to changes in the work environment; Manages competing demands; Changes approach or method to best fit the situation; Able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.

Senior:
  • Solid knowledge of basic arithmetic, geometry and trigonometry.
  • Proficient in First Article inspections and PPAP documentation.
  • Proficient in containment inspections and field return inspections.
  • Ability to use all types of inspection equipment and precision measurement devices.
  • Ability to manage and direct activities of the NDT team.
  • Ability to perform additional NDT discipline inspections and duties.

Additional Requirements:
  • Travel domestically and internationally up to 25% of the time.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver license and passport.
