Job description

Statewide Hydraulics and Drainage Engineer
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a technical expert to lead our Statewide Hydraulics and Drainage program.

What You'll Do
In this role, you will serve as the primary authority on drainage design across the state. You will work with a high degree of independence, overseeing all central hydraulic activities and ensuring our infrastructure is resilient and efficient.
Key Responsibilities
As the Statewide Engineer, your duties will include:
  • Technical Authority: Serving as the lead expert for all UDOT hydraulic and drainage information.
  • Policy Management: Updating and maintaining official Division Manuals and design standards.
  • Bridge Safety: Providing expert guidance on bridge scour projects and serving on the bridge scour rating committee.
  • Strategic Planning: Directing the design of drainage and stormwater systems for various UDOT projects.
  • Research & Innovation: Evaluating new research findings to see if they can be integrated into UDOT's standards.
  • Collaboration: Working with other departments and government agencies to protect UDOT assets and advocate for functional drainage systems.
  • Mentorship: Providing training to UDOT staff and participating in on-site field visits when necessary.

Qualifications
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Must be a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Utah.
  • Must have at least two (2) years of engineering experience following your PE license

Preferences
Preference may be given to those with at least one of the following:
  • At least four (4) years of experience in hydraulic design and bridge scour analysis, specifically on roadway and structure projects.
  • Experience with the UDOT project delivery process.

  • Process Expertise: A solid understanding of UDOT's Project Development, permitting and application, project delivery system, and QC/QA processes.
