Tasks can range from writing scripts to improving existing codebases or collaborating on community-driven projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Python Volunteer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python Volunteer, you should possess a solid understanding of Python programming fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and experience with version control systems like Git. Job description

Description:

US Signal is a leading data center services provider, offering secure, reliable network, cloud hosting, colocation, data protection, and disaster recovery services — all powered by its expansive, robust fiber network. US Signal also helps customers optimize their IT resources through the provision of managed services and professional services.

We are hiring a Sr. R&D Cloud Engineer to join our team immediately!

If you're the kind of engineer who gets restless maintaining what already exists and wants to build what comes next, this role was designed for you.

At US Signal, our OpenCloud platform powers enterprise infrastructure across a national footprint. As a Sr. R&D Cloud Engineer, you'll sit at the intersection of research and production prototyping emerging capabilities, stress-testing them in the lab, and engineering them into reliable, scalable platforms that our customers depend on. This is a hands-on role with real ownership, from first proof of concept through stable production deployment.

What You'll Own

  • Design, build, and operate the private cloud, virtualization, and core infrastructure platforms that underpin OpenCloud. You're not inheriting someone else's architecture and maintaining it, you're shaping it.
  • Lead proofs of concept and production validation for emerging infrastructure, storage, container, and platform technologies. You'll apply sound engineering judgment to assess risk, value, and real-world operability, not just whether something works in a lab.
  • Build automation-first platforms from the ground up. Production-grade scripting, Infrastructure as Code (Python, Bash, Terraform, Ansible), DevOps pipelines, and observability aren't supporting tasks here, they're core to how you work.
  • Architect storage, backup, and data protection solutions that meet enterprise-grade requirements for performance, resilience, recoverability, and compliance across complex hybrid cloud environments.
  • Serve as a technical leader and cross-functional partner. You'll be a point of escalation for emerging platform capabilities and a collaborator with product, platform, operations, vendors, and open-source communities, helping move innovations from concept to high-quality, scalable services.

You'll Be a Strong Fit If You

  • Have deep, hands-on experience with private cloud, virtualization, and hybrid cloud infrastructure at scale
  • Have built and shipped automation and IaC in production environments, not just written it for demos
  • Are comfortable owning ambiguous, early-stage technical problems and driving them to completion
  • Can bridge the gap between R&D thinking and production-grade engineering discipline
  • Thrive in a collaborative environment but don't need a committee to make technical decisions
Requirements:

What you bring to the team:

  • 6+ Years Experience of hands-on systems engineering experience, across Linux, virtualization, and storage, including hands-on experience with OpenStack or CloudStack. Nutanix experience, preferred.
  • Deep expertise in Linux systems, private cloud IaaS and virtualization (OpenStack/CloudStack or similar), enterprise storage and data protection (SAN/NAS, object storage), with strong Kubernetes experience preferred and exposure to AI/ML infrastructure preferred.
  • Advanced platform engineering and automation capabilities, including Python and Bash scripting, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible), DevOps pipelines, and system/storage observability best practices, with a proven track record of delivering scalable, production-grade solutions in large, complex environments.
  • Strong technical leadership and influence skills, serving as an escalation point for emerging platform technologies, effectively communicating complex concepts to technical and executive stakeholders, and demonstrating adaptability and continuous learning in rapidly evolving infrastructure ecosystems.

Competencies:

  • Act Like an Owner: Accountability, Leadership, Business Acumen
  • Stay Curious: Learning Agility, Innovation, Open-Mindedness
  • Find a Way to Win: Results Orientation, Initiative

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree or 4+ Years Professional Experience in Computer Science.

What We Offer:

In return for your hard work and commitment, you will enjoy a supportive and inclusive workplace, along with the following benefits:

  • Generous paid time off policy, including vacation, and 10 paid holidays
  • Competitive and comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits plans with Flexible Spending benefits including medical/dental expenses and dependent care
  • 401(k) retirement plan with a generous contribution
  • Group Term Life Insurance covered 100% by employer
  • Wellness incentive to promote overall employee well-being
  • Paid volunteer time
  • Business casual dress code

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

This position may be performed in either a standard office setting or a home office environment. It requires prolonged periods of sitting, frequent use of a computer and other office equipment, and effective time management in a self-directed work environment. Occasional lifting of items up to 25 pounds may be required.

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $100,000 - $130,000 per year, depending on location, skills, experience, and other job-related factors.
