Is Python enough to get a finance job?

Python is a valuable skill for finance jobs such as quantitative analyst, data analyst, or financial engineer, as it is widely used for data analysis, modeling, and automation. However, employers often look for additional skills like finance knowledge, statistical understanding, and experience with tools such as Excel, SQL, or financial modeling. Combining Python with domain expertise and other technical skills increases job prospects in finance roles.

What finance jobs use Python?

Finance jobs that use Python include quantitative analyst, financial analyst, risk manager, and algorithmic trader roles. These positions often require skills in data analysis, modeling, and automation, with Python being used for tasks such as data processing, backtesting strategies, and building financial models.

Is Python a high paying job?

Python roles in finance, such as quantitative analysts or financial software developers, tend to offer high salaries due to the demand for programming skills and financial knowledge. Compensation varies based on experience, location, and industry, but Python expertise is generally associated with well-paying positions in finance and data analysis. Certifications and proficiency with related tools like pandas or NumPy can also enhance earning potential.

Is Python useful in finance?

Python is widely used in finance roles such as quantitative analyst, trader, and financial engineer due to its simplicity and extensive libraries like pandas, NumPy, and scikit-learn. It is commonly employed for data analysis, algorithmic trading, risk management, and financial modeling, making it a valuable skill for finance professionals.

What is the difference between Python Finance vs Quantitative Analyst?

AspectPython FinanceQuantitative Analyst

Python Finance professionals focus on coding and data analysis within financial contexts, often requiring programming skills and finance knowledge. Quantitative Analysts typically have advanced degrees and focus on developing complex models for trading and risk management. While both roles work in finance, Python Finance emphasizes programming, whereas Quantitative Analysts emphasize mathematical modeling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python Finance professional, and why are they important?

Success in Python Finance requires strong programming skills in Python, a solid grasp of financial concepts, and often a degree in finance, mathematics, or computer science. Familiarity with technical tools like pandas, NumPy, SQL databases, and financial modeling libraries is typically expected, as well as experience with version control and sometimes certifications like CFA or FRM. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies are essential for efficiently analyzing financial data, automating processes, and delivering insights that drive smart financial decision-making.

How do Python Finance professionals typically collaborate with other departments within a financial organization?

Python Finance professionals often work closely with teams such as data analytics, risk management, trading, and IT. Collaboration usually involves developing or maintaining automated financial models, integrating data pipelines, and supporting real-time analytics. Clear communication is essential, as you may need to translate complex technical concepts into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders. This cross-functional teamwork not only enhances project outcomes but also provides opportunities to broaden your understanding of the business and financial processes.

What is a Python Finance professional?

A Python Finance professional is someone who uses the Python programming language to analyze financial data, build financial models, automate trading systems, and perform quantitative analysis. These professionals often work in roles such as quantitative analysts, data scientists, or software developers within finance-related industries. They leverage Python’s powerful libraries like Pandas, NumPy, and scikit-learn to handle large datasets and perform complex financial computations. Their work helps financial institutions make data-driven decisions, improve efficiency, and gain insights into market trends.

Job description

Position Summary

This is a high-visibility, high-impact role at the center of Corporate Finance. Reporting directly to the Vice President, Strategic Finance, you will serve as the key support partner across the strategic finance and finance transformation agenda - driving special projects, strategic workstreams, Board of Directors deliverables, and executive support for the CFO and CAO.

You will operate as a trusted right hand to the VP: framing ambiguous problems, building the analysis and models that inform enterprise decisions, and partnering across Corporate Development, Investor Relations, Treasury, and the operating companies. You will also help lead our AI and data agenda - modernizing finance infrastructure, incorporating AI, tooling, and ways of driving growth and scaling operations.

The ideal candidate combines rigorous financial and analytical horsepower with executive presence, intellectual curiosity, and a bias for action. You are equally comfortable building a long-term model from scratch, synthesizing a Board-ready narrative, and driving ad-hoc special projects.

Key Responsibilities
Special Projects & Strategic Workstreams
  • Lead and support special projects and cross-functional strategic workstreams that advance the company's enterprise and value-creation priorities.
  • Structure ambiguous problems into clear frameworks, workplans, and decision-ready analyses for senior leadership.
  • Drive execution end to end - from problem definition and data gathering through analysis, recommendation, and implementation follow-through.
Financial Planning & Capital Allocation
  • Support strategic and financial planning - helping the team shape the company's financial goals and trajectory over the next 3-to-5-years.
  • Lead capital allocation analysis - evaluating which new projects, investments, and business opportunities will deliver the highest risk-adjusted returns.
  • Build complex models, scenarios, and business cases that inform long-term targets and where the company deploys capital.
Board & Executive Deliverables
  • Prepare Board of Directors (BOD) materials - building the analysis, narrative, and presentation content behind key deliverables.
  • Provide direct CFO and CAO support on priority initiatives, updates, and enterprise decisions requiring finance leadership input.
  • Translate complex analysis into clear, executive-ready communication that drives alignment and action.
Finance Transformation, AI & Data
  • Help drive the AI and data agenda for the finance organization - identifying, piloting, and scaling opportunities to modernize how finance works.
  • Support the modernization of finance infrastructure and tooling - partnering with finance, technology, and data teams to improve data quality, automation, and self-service analytics.
  • Champion new ways of working that increase speed, accuracy, and insight across planning, reporting, and analysis.
Business Support and Ad-Hoc Analysis
  • Lead benchmarking, performance analysis, and other workstreams to identify opportunities to improve growth, productivity, and profitability within our portfolio of operating companies.
  • Drive ad-hoc analyses across a broad range of financial, strategic, and operational areas.
  • Partner with Corporate Development, Investor Relations, Treasury, and operating-company leadership to support other Corporate-related workstreams.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or a related quantitative field.
  • 7-10+ years of progressive experience in strategic finance, FP&A, corporate development, investment banking, consulting, or a comparable analytical finance role, including experience leading complex, cross-functional initiatives.
  • Advanced financial modeling and analytical skills - able to build sophisticated models from scratch and translate data into insight.
  • Executive communication - proven ability to build and deliver Board-level and C-suite-ready materials.
  • Business partnership - strong track record influencing and collaborating across functions and levels.
  • Bias for action and ownership - thrives in ambiguity, manages multiple priorities, and drives work to completion.
Preferred
  • MBA, CFA, CPA, or equivalent advanced credential.
  • Experience at a large, multi-business or Fortune 500 industrial / diversified company.
  • Data & AI fluency - hands-on experience with modern analytics tools, data platforms, and applying AI/automation to finance workflows (e.g., Power BI, SQL, Python, or comparable).
  • Exposure to corporate development, investor relations, or treasury.
Core Competencies
  • Strategic & analytical thinking - connects detailed analysis to the enterprise picture.
  • Executive presence - credible, clear, and composed with senior stakeholders.
  • Intellectual curiosity - challenges "the why" and seeks out better questions, tools, and answers.
  • Adaptability - delivers high-quality work amid ambiguity and shifting priorities.
  • Collaboration & influence - builds trust and drives outcomes without direct authority.
