Purchasing Generalist

The Purchasing Generalist is responsible for sourcing, procuring, and managing materials, equipment, and supplies across Plumbing, HVAC, and Electrical product lines. This role ensures that all purchasing activities align with company needs, vendor relationships are maintained, and procurement processes are efficient and cost-effective. The Purchasing Generalist collaborates closely with internal teams, including sales, operations, and warehouse personnel, to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality products while adhering to budgetary and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Vendor & Supplier Management

  • Identify, evaluate, and establish relationships with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure reliable and cost-effective procurement of materials and products.
  • Negotiate pricing, contracts, and terms with vendors to secure the best value while maintaining product quality and delivery efficiency.
  • Monitor supplier performance, ensuring compliance with agreed-upon terms, and resolve issues related to quality, delivery delays, or pricing discrepancies.
  • Research new and alternative suppliers to optimize cost, product availability, and supply chain efficiency.

Procurement & Inventory Management

  • Generate and manage purchase orders for products, materials, and equipment based on company and branch needs.
  • Verify incoming shipments against purchase orders and invoices, ensuring accuracy in quantities, pricing, and product specifications.
  • Work closely with warehouse and logistics teams to monitor inventory levels and maintain optimal stock levels, preventing shortages and minimizing excess inventory.
  • Resolve discrepancies in received shipments, including damaged, incorrect, or missing items, by coordinating with vendors and internal stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate procurement records, including purchase orders, invoices, receipts, supplier agreements, and product data.

Product & Market Analysis

  • Assess products and suppliers based on key criteria such as cost, quality, reliability, availability, and overall value.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, product innovations, market pricing fluctuations, and supply chain developments affecting Plumbing, HVAC, and Electrical product categories.
  • Evaluate product lifecycle costs and purchasing trends to support informed buying decisions and inventory strategies.

Operational Coordination

  • Collaborate with internal departments, including sales, operations, branch personnel, and management teams, to ensure purchasing activities align with business objectives and customer expectations.
  • Work with shipping and logistics teams to coordinate timely deliveries and minimize operational disruptions.
  • Assist in developing and implementing cost-saving initiatives and procurement strategies without compromising product quality or service levels.

Compliance & Reporting

Qualifications & Skills

  • Knowledge of Plumbing, HVAC, Electrical, or other wholesale distribution products and materials preferred.
  • Experience in purchasing, procurement, supply chain management, inventory control, or a related field.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Proficiency with purchasing software, ERP systems, and inventory management tools.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate supplier performance, product quality, and cost efficiency.
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple vendor relationships, product categories, and purchase orders simultaneously.
