Job Overview

The Sr. Manager, Purchasing - Cardiac Assist leads strategic and operational purchasing activities supporting the manufacturing of Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps (IABP) and balloon catheters. This role is accountable for supplier performance, cost optimization, risk mitigation, and compliance to applicable quality and regulatory requirements while ensuring uninterrupted supply to meet production and customer demand. The position partners closely with Supply Chain, Operations, Engineering, Quality, and R&D, and collaborates with the broader ACT sourcing community to leverage scale and best practices.

Job Responsibilities and Essential Duties

Key responsibilities include (estimated % of time):

  • Lead strategic supplier relationships (contracts, negotiations, performance management, QBRs) and build long-term partnerships aligned to Cardiac Assist objectives (20%).
  • Establish and execute sourcing strategies (including leveraging the broader ACT community) to deliver cost savings, continuity of supply, and value engineering opportunities (20%).
  • Ensure supply chain readiness and uninterrupted material flow for raw materials, components, and purchased finished goods through planning alignment, inventory optimization, and contingency planning (20%).
  • Oversee compliance and governance by maintaining procurement policies and ensuring adherence to internal quality systems and applicable regulatory/industry standards (e.g., FDA, ISO 13485, GMP as applicable) (10%).
  • Direct vendor management strategy, including maintaining the Approved Supplier List (ASL), leading supplier evaluations, audits/site visits, and ongoing performance reviews (10%).
  • Own and optimize the procurement budget; manage supplier tooling repair/replacement budgets; and oversee key CMOs/CDMOs and critical component suppliers supporting IABP consoles and catheter manufacturing (10%).
  • Develop and track procurement KPIs; drive continuous improvement across procurement operations; and use data-driven insights to support plant performance and operational excellence (5%).
  • Lead, develop, and mentor the Purchasing team; establish accountability and inclusive culture; and drive alignment across multiple sites within a matrixed organization (5%).

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Engineering, or related field required; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 8+ years of progressive experience in purchasing, materials management, strategic sourcing, and/or supply chain leadership, including 5+ years of people management experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience in the medical device industry required or strongly preferred.
  • APICS, ISM, or equivalent certification preferred. Experience in a regulated industry required; medical device manufacturing experience strongly preferred (FDA, ISO 13485, GMP).

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated strategic sourcing experience with measurable cost savings and strong understanding of procurement strategy, sourcing methodologies, and supply chain optimization.
  • Advanced negotiation skills and strong financial/analytical acumen (e.g., cost modeling, financial modeling, and data-driven decision making).
  • Proven people leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders in a matrixed, multi-site environment and manage ambiguity effectively.
  • Strong knowledge of supplier qualification, supplier performance management, and vendor governance practices (e.g., ASL maintenance, supplier evaluations, audits/site visits).
  • Experience managing inventory and replenishment systems including Kanban, VMI, and consignment; understanding of demand planning and material flow in support of production.
  • Working knowledge of supplier quality expectations and regulatory requirements within medical device manufacturing (FDA and ISO 13485), including change control and documentation discipline.
  • Proficiency in MRP/ERP systems required; SAP experience strongly preferred.

Salary range:  $161k - $175k; 25% bonus
