Responsibilities:
As a Meat department manager at Gelson's, you will play a key role in supporting the daily operations of our meat department. You will be at the forefront of the meat department operations. The meat manager is responsible for overseeing the purchasing, inventory, and overall presentation of the department. You will ensure proper levels of stock and supplies are maintained and product placement is optimal for profitability. You will supervise the staff the ensure productivity and excellent customer service and ensure the meat cases are well stocked with fresh, high-quality meat and poultry products for our customers.
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop weekly schedule for department staff and manage hours to ensure profitability while maintaining quality service.
  • Monitor sales volume, inspect store inventory levels and maintain in-store promotional materials.
  • Monitor inventory for spoilage and ensure proper rotation of merchandise.
  • Ensure exceptional presentation of meats, seafood, and other products.
  • Ensure the department is in compliance with OSHA and Health Department standards.
  • Receive and unload merchandise and verify that vendor invoices match item count; store all products in appropriate designated areas.
  • Monitor all operations in the department and ensure employees are adhering to company policies and procedures.
  • Follow safety and sanitation guidelines to ensure a clean and safe working environment.
  • Embrace new challenges and be a flexible team player, taking on responsibilities as needed.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Meat cutter experience
  • Ability to operate meat saw, slicers, grinder and wrapping machines
  • Previous experience in a grocery retail setting
  • Highly effective organizational and multitasking skills
  • Ability to lift and move heavy items and stand for extended periods
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Knowledge of grocery products, merchandising techniques, and inventory management
  • Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays

Physical requirements:
  • Continuous hand manipulation including, grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation
  • Reaching above and at shoulder level
  • Standing, walking, bending up to 8 hours per day
  • Walking on uneven surfaces
  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs frequently, 80 lbs occasionally
  • Driving moving equipment (Forklift / Power jack)
  • Working near hazardous equipment (Baler, trash compactor)
  • Exposure to dust, gas, fumes (Receiving dock)
  • Exposure to extremes in temperature (Coolers)
