Job description

At Joseph’s Classic Market, our Receiving/Warehouse Manager plays a critical role in ensuring that every product entering the store meets our standards for accuracy, quality, and efficiency. While guests may not always see this work directly, it is essential to protecting inventory integrity, supporting every department, and maintaining the excellence our customers expect.

As Receiving/Warehouse Manager, you’ll deepen your expertise in inventory control, vendor accountability, logistics coordination, and shrink reduction while working closely with store leadership and department managers. We support team members who take ownership, improve processes, and grow their operational leadership skills within our organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Receiving & Inspection
    • Receive all incoming deliveries for grocery, perishable, and non-food items
    • Inspect shipments for accuracy, quality, and damage
    • Verify purchase orders against packing slips and invoices
    • Note discrepancies and report immediately to Store Manager or department leads
    • Refuse and document any out-of-spec or unauthorized deliveries
  • Product Organization & Distribution
    • Properly label and date all incoming products
    • Organize and store products in correct temperature zones (cooler, freezer, dry storage)
    • Stage and distribute items to departments quickly and efficiently
    • Assist departments in locating or retrieving deliveries when needed
  • Documentation & Systems
    • Maintain accurate receiving logs and vendor delivery sheets
    • Enter received inventory into store systems (if applicable)
    • File signed packing slips and purchase orders for recordkeeping
    • Track product issues, vendor performance, and rejections
  • Inventory Support
    • Monitor backstock levels and communicate inventory concerns to department managers
    • Assist with periodic inventory counts as needed
    • Help identify expired or slow-moving products in storage areas
    • Reduce shrink by rotating inventory and ensuring FIFO is followed
  • Safety & Cleanliness
    • Keep receiving area clean, clear, and hazard-free at all times
    • Follow safety procedures for lifting, equipment use, and refrigerated storage
    • Break down boxes, dispose of packaging, and recycle materials properly
    • Ensure compliance with all sanitation and food safety standards
  • Team Leadership
    • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise receiving associates
    • Provide coaching, support, and performance evaluations
    • Monitor department attendance and ensure associates adhere to scheduled shifts and company timekeeping policies, addressing any attendance or punctuality concerns promptly and consistently
    • Follow up on performance or attendance issues with proper documentation and corrective action when necessary, including disciplinary action forms, notes to file, and Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) to support accountability and improvement within the department
    • Conduct daily pre-shift meetings to align team on goals and quality standards
    • Promote a culture of organization, cleanliness, urgency, accountability, and pride
  • Communication & Coordination
    • Coordinate delivery windows with vendors and departments
    • Communicate product issues or shortages to buyers and store leadership
    • Build strong relationships with drivers and vendors for smooth operations
    • Stay informed on department needs to better anticipate deliveries

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1 year of retail, warehouse, or back-of-house receiving experience
  • Ability to read and verify invoices and packing slips accurately
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Able to safely lift and move items weighing up to 50 lbs and operate in cold environments
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Basic computer and Excel knowledge
  • Handheld scanner skills preferred
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and able to work early mornings or flexible shifts

Physical & Work Environment

This role is performed in warehouse, receiving dock, cooler, and freezer environments and requires extended periods of standing, walking, lifting, and organizing deliveries throughout the shift. The Receiving/Warehouse Manager must be able to safely lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds and work in varying temperatures, including cold storage areas. The environment is fast-paced and logistics-focused, requiring strong time management, attention to detail, and physical stamina. Early morning or flexible shift availability is required to accommodate delivery schedules.
