What is a public finance intern?

Public Finance Interns are students or recent graduates who work with government agencies, public sector organizations, or financial institutions to support projects related to public funding, budgeting, and investments. They typically assist with research, data analysis, preparing reports, and learning about municipal bonds, budgeting processes, and financial policy. This role provides valuable hands-on experience in understanding how public entities manage their finances and fund public projects such as infrastructure, education, or healthcare initiatives.

What types of projects does a public finance intern typically work on during their internship?

Public Finance Interns often assist with research and analysis related to municipal bonds, budget planning, and financial modeling for public sector projects such as schools, transportation, or infrastructure. They may help prepare presentations, support client meetings, and contribute to due diligence processes. Interns frequently collaborate with analysts, bankers, and government officials, gaining exposure to both the technical and interpersonal sides of public finance. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into how public entities secure funding and manage large-scale projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a public finance intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Public Finance Intern, you need strong analytical skills, foundational knowledge in finance or economics, and coursework or experience relevant to public sector finance. Familiarity with Excel, financial modeling tools, and government budgeting software is often required.
