What Does a Psychology Intern Do?

A Psychology Intern is enrolled in an academic program and typically performs clinical work under the supervision of a licensed Psychologist. The exact specifications of each psychology internship vary, but in this role, you must meet the standards set forth by the American Psychology Association (APA). During the internship, you work on developing several skills to offer psychological care to patients, by performing research, taking assessments, and practicing therapy sessions. You work closely with your supervisor to ensure you develop the necessary skills expected of students at this level of education. The internship may provide academic credit depending on the institution and the doctoral-level program you are pursuing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Psychology Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Psychology Intern, you need foundational knowledge in psychological theories, research methods, and ethical guidelines, often supported by enrollment in a graduate psychology program. Familiarity with data analysis software (such as SPSS), standardized assessment tools, and client record-keeping systems is commonly required. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and adaptability help interns build rapport with clients and function effectively within clinical teams. These skills ensure interns can provide meaningful support, uphold professional standards, and successfully transition to advanced roles in psychology.

What kinds of supervision and mentorship can Psychology Interns typically expect during their internship?

Psychology Interns usually receive structured supervision from licensed psychologists who provide guidance, feedback, and support throughout the internship. Weekly supervision meetings are standard, where interns can discuss cases, review ethical considerations, and reflect on their professional development. In addition to one-on-one supervision, many programs offer group supervision and didactic seminars to enhance learning. This collaborative environment helps interns build confidence, address challenges, and ensures they are well-prepared for independent practice.

What are Psychology Interns?

Psychology Interns are graduate students or recent graduates who are in training to become professional psychologists. They work under the supervision of licensed psychologists in clinical, research, or educational settings to gain practical experience. Psychology Interns are involved in tasks such as conducting assessments, providing therapy, observing sessions, and participating in research projects. Their internships are often a required part of their degree program and are essential for obtaining licensure as a psychologist.
