What is a prototype?

Prototypes are early models or samples of a product built to test a concept or process. They allow designers, engineers, and stakeholders to explore ideas, evaluate functionality, and identify potential issues before full-scale production begins. Prototypes can range from simple sketches or mockups to fully functional models, depending on the stage of development and the goals of the project. Creating a prototype helps teams gather feedback, refine designs, and make informed decisions for the final product.

What is the difference between Prototype vs Product Designer?

AspectPrototype
RoleCreates interactive models to test concepts and functionality
SkillsUI/UX design, wireframing, prototyping tools, user testing
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, product development, user experience departments
CertificationsDesign certifications, UX certifications, proficiency in prototyping tools

While a Prototype focuses on building interactive models to test ideas, a Product Designer oversees the entire product development process, including user experience, visual design, and functionality. Prototypes are tools used within the product design process, making the roles complementary but distinct.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in prototype development roles?

Professionals in prototype development often encounter challenges such as tight project deadlines, evolving design requirements, and the need to rapidly iterate based on stakeholder feedback. Collaboration between engineers, designers, and product managers is crucial, as prototypes frequently require interdisciplinary input and quick problem-solving. Additionally, balancing innovation with practicality—ensuring the prototype is both creative and feasible for further development—can be demanding but is highly rewarding for those who enjoy dynamic, hands-on work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a prototype engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Prototype Engineer, you need strong skills in mechanical design, fabrication techniques, and a relevant engineering degree or technical certification. Familiarity with CAD software, 3D printing, CNC machinery, and rapid prototyping tools is typically required. Creativity, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this position. These skills are crucial for efficiently turning design concepts into functional prototypes that drive product innovation.

Job description

Overview

About GreenSky

GreenSky, LLC, headquartered in Atlanta, is a leading technology company Powering Commerce at the Point of Sale for a growing ecosystem of merchants, consumers, and banks. GreenSky's highly scalable, proprietary and patented technology platform enables merchants to offer frictionless promotional payment options to consumers, driving increased sales volume and accelerated cash flow. The GreenSky Program is operated on behalf of, and financing is offered and made by, federally insured, federal or state chartered financial institutions, which leverage GreenSky's technology to offer loans to primarily super-prime and prime consumers nationwide. Since GreenSky's inception, nearly 6 million consumers have financed more than $60 billion of commerce using GreenSky's real time "apply and buy" technology.

Location: Atlanta, GA (Hybrid: 3 Days per week)

This role requires unrestricted work authorization now and in the future, as visa sponsorship and sponsorship transfers are not available.

About the role

As a Senior Product Manager on an AI-Native Pod, you will own a product area end to end inside a small, high-velocity team. Our pods are 3-4 people - a Product Manager, a Tech Lead, and a QA Lead - operating agentically to drive spec to code including research, design, story generation, code, and testing.

This is a fundamentally different operating model from traditional product management. Instead of writing long PRDs that get handed to a backlog, you will produce working clickable prototypes generated within hours of identifying an intent that has prioritized. Instead of running 3-week research cycles, you will use AI-assisted synthesis to validate problem statements in hours and days. Instead of managing a queue, you will own quarterly outcome metrics and the pod's velocity against it.

You will report to the VP of Product and have dotted line access to the Chief Product Officer. The tools you need are already approved and provisioned - Claude, Kiro, Figma, Cursor, Playwright with hands on expertise and AI fluency.

This role is right for a product manager who already builds with AI tools daily, who has a velocity bias, and who wants to be measured on the outcomes their pod ships - not on the size of their roadmap or the volume of their backlog.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Prototype before you spec. Use AI tools (Claude, Kiro, Figma, Co-Pilot, Granola, Obsidian, and equivalents) to generate product specs from customer intent and turn them into working clickable prototypes within hours. The prototype, not the document, is how you communicate intent to your pod and to stakeholders. You will be an active builder inside the pod, not a director of work handed off to others.
  • Own an outcome, not a backlog. You will be accountable for clear outcome metrics each quarter and your performance is judged on what the pod ships and what moves the metric, not just on the volume of tickets you manage or the length of your roadmap.
  • Operating inside a pod Run product discovery, market validation, user research, and spec-to-story conversion at AI-native speed. You will conduct user interviews and synthesize findings into validated problem statements. You will move from validated problems to a written, pod-ready spec in hours/days, not weeks or months. Partner daily with your Tech Lead and QA Lead to size, build, and ship the work. Bring Risk, Compliance, Legal, and other stakeholders into the prototype phase.
  • Drive the operating model forward. Help define what good looks like in GreenSky's emerging agentic product operating model. Contribute to pod norms, AI tooling standards, reusable context packs, and the playbook other pods will inherit. You are not just operating inside the new model - you are helping build it.
Required Skills/Qualifications
  • 5+ years in product management, with at least 2 years owning consumer-facing or merchant-facing product surfaces at a fintech, marketplace, payments, or high-growth software company. You have shipped products that real customers and operators use.
  • Firsthand, daily fluency with AI prototyping and product tools - Claude, Kiro, Figma, Cursor, Lovable, or equivalents. You have personally built and shipped using these tools. This is not theoretical, and you can demonstrate it during the interview process.
  • Velocity bias. You ship product intent in days, not weeks or months. You would rather put a near ready solution in front of real users and stakeholders and iterate vs delaying for perfect.
  • Strong written product instinct. You write PRDs, one-pagers, and decision memos that engineers, designers, and executives read and act on. You write them quickly and leverage AI to do it.
  • Comfort operating in a small pod. You have worked closely with Tech Lead and QA Lead before. You understand where each role's accountability starts and ends, and you do not try to be all three at once.
  • Fluency with both Agile mechanics (sprint planning, retrospectives, story sizing) and the modern product operating model (outcome ownership, continuous discovery, continuous delivery, empowered product teams).
  • Strong cross-functional partnership skills, especially with Sales, Risk, Compliance, Legal, Engineering, Design, Data, and Operations.
  • Engage business users and stakeholders to understand needs, map pain points, and validate solutions through rapid testing and feedback.
  • Build and manage a business-outcome-driven backlog focused on performance, accuracy, value, and user experience.
  • Understanding of responsible artificial intelligence practices from day one, including explainability, audit trails, testing, and control evidence.
  • Track key performance indicators such as adoption, time saved, quality, accuracy, throughput, and operational risk exceptions.
  • Participate in change management with operations and sales teams to drive enablement, communications, and feedback loops.
  • Ensure solutions meet security, privacy, and regulatory expectations for data protection and usage.
  • Monitor outcomes post-launch and continuously improve product performance, reliability, and usability and share learnings.
  • Strong customer focus with demonstrated ability to translate user needs into simple, high-impact product experiences.
  • Comfort working in fast-paced environments with changing priorities and iterative delivery expectations.
  • Experience with experimentation, rapid prototyping, and continuous product discovery methods
  • Prior experience in lending, payments, BNPL, or merchant-acquiring product surfaces; direct exposure to regulated environments is a plus.
What you will get
  • Best-in-class tooling and training in AI for already approved tools and pod playbooks.
  • Direct access to the EVP of Product, the Chief Product Officer and C suite executives to drive business results. Decisions move at the speed the work moves so you learn and execute fast.
  • A front-row seat to one of the most ambitious AI-native operating model transitions in fintech.
  • Competitive base salary, performance upside tied OKRs, and a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, 401(k) with company match, and paid time off.

Our compensation structure is designed to reflect the cost of labor across various U.S. geographic markets. The base salary for this role ranges from $125,000 per year to $250,000 per year. Compensation will be determined by several factors, including relevant knowledge, skills, and experience. This role is also eligible to receive an annual bonus within a comprehensive total rewards package, alongside a full suite of medical, dental, vision, disability insurance, life insurance, 401k retirement benefits, paid time off, paid holidays, and paid personal/sick time.
