Prototype Model Maker information

What does a prototype model maker do?

A Prototype Model Maker creates physical models and prototypes of products to help designers, engineers, and manufacturers test form, fit, and function. They use various materials, tools, and techniques, including CNC machining, 3D printing, and handcrafting, to build accurate representations of product concepts. Their work helps refine designs before mass production, reducing costs and identifying potential design flaws early in the process.

What does a typical day look like for a prototype model maker?

A typical day for a Prototype Model Maker involves reviewing design plans or CAD drawings, selecting materials, and using a range of hand and power tools or machines to build physical models of new products or parts. You might spend part of your day operating 3D printers or CNC machines, assembling components, and collaborating closely with engineers and designers to resolve technical challenges. Attention to detail and adaptability are crucial, as you may need to create iterations or make adjustments based on feedback. The role can be both creative and technical, and often includes problem-solving in a hands-on workshop or lab environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the prototype model maker position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Prototype Model Maker, you need a solid background in fabrication, technical drawing interpretation, and hands-on skills with materials such as plastics, metals, and wood, often supported by relevant technical training or apprenticeship. Familiarity with CAD software, 3D printers, CNC machines, and other model-making tools is commonly required. Attention to detail, creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for this role. These skills are crucial because they allow for precise, innovative, and collaborative creation of functional prototypes that meet design and engineering specifications.

Job description

Job Posting: Model Maker Technician
Position Type: Full-Time

Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Model Maker Technician to join our hardware engineering team. In this hands-on prototyping role, you will bring innovative autonomous mobility solutions to life by building high-quality prototypes, functional proof-of-concepts, and first-article assemblies.
Working closely with cross-functional engineers and designers in a fast-paced development environment, you will leverage your expertise in CNC setup, machining, welding, and advanced fabrication to produce precision components from CAD models and engineering drawings.

Key Responsibilities
  • CNC Setup & Machining: Set up, calibrate, operate, and maintain 3-axis and multi-axis CNC machines (mills, lathes) to produce precision prototype components according to tight tolerances and specifications.
  • Hands-On Fabrication: Perform metalworking operations, including milling, turning, drilling, shearing, bending, and basic welding to fabricate custom prototype parts.
  • Advanced Materials & Additive Manufacturing: Work with composites, plastics, and 3D printing (additive manufacturing) platforms to support diverse hardware prototyping needs.
  • Finishing & Craftsmanship: Utilize hand tools and precision finishing equipment to deburr, polish, fit, and refine parts to ensure high aesthetic and functional craftsmanship.
  • Quality & Inspection: Inspect finished components against blueprints, CAD models, and GD&T specifications using precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, CMM).
  • Design Collaboration & DFM: Partner with engineers and designers to review early-stage designs, troubleshoot fabrication challenges, and provide feedback on Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
  • Shop Safety & Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment, adhering to safety protocols for equipment operation, chemical handling, and waste management.

Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
  • Experience: 2+ years of experience as a Model Maker, Fabricator, Machinist, or CNC Operator in a rapid prototyping, R&D, or fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Technical Blueprint Reading: Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and CAD models (SolidWorks, CATIA, etc.).
  • Tooling & Precision Measurement: Demonstrated skill with manual/CNC machine tools, precision measuring instruments, and basic knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) principles.
  • Problem-Solving & Communication: Strong mechanical problem-solving mindset with the ability to troubleshoot fabrication issues and communicate project updates or technical risks effectively.
  • Safety Adherence: Proven commitment to shop safety rules, PPE compliance, and safe material handling.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education: Associate’s Degree, Technical Certification, or Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related trade field.
  • Software & Documentation: Experience using project tracking and documentation tools such as Jira, Confluence, or digital shop management systems.
  • Multi-Disciplinary Fabrication: Experience combining metals, composites, sheet metal, and 3D-printed elements into complex electro-mechanical assemblies.
