At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard -from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
General Motors is seeking a Controls Development Engineer - Rapid Prototype to support the development of advanced vehicle controls solutions. In this role, you will lead technical solution development across current, new, and major programs by translating requirements into functional designs, developing and integrating controls content, and supporting analysis, testing, and issue resolution. This role is aligned to a Milford-based Vehicle Mechatronic Embedded Controls (VMEC) organization focused on rapid prototyping and vehicle controls development.
What You'll Do
Lead and generate technical solutions, including requirements definition, functional decomposition, analysis, development, and testing for current, new, and major vehicle programs
Lead development of software system team design content in Embedded C and drive software anomaly investigation and correction
Perform complex design analysis to support robust controls development and integration
Specify, decompose, and balance system requirements across functions and interfaces
Provide, communicate, and support common best practices across the software and controls engineering community
Serve as a subject matter expert for at least one platform, subsystem, or application component
Develop, integrate, and validate rapid prototype controls solutions to support early feature development, proof-of-concept work, and vehicle-level learning
Collaborate with systems, software, calibration, validation, and vehicle integration teams to deliver high-quality controls content
Support issue identification, root cause analysis, and corrective action for prototype and production-intent controls behavior
Contribute to continuous improvement of controls methods, tools, and development processes
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field
Experience in embedded controls, software, or algorithm development. Embedded C
Experience in vehicle controls, chassis controls, propulsion controls, or other dynamic embedded control systems
Experience with controls development tools and methods such as Matlab/Simulink, model-based development, and structured software design practices
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to solve unusual and difficult technical problems
Experience translating system requirements into control logic, software design content, and testable deliverables
Experience supporting design, integration, testing, and issue resolution in a fast-paced engineering environment
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally across engineering teams
Demonstrated ability to operate independently and lead technical workstreams
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline
Experience with rapid controller prototyping tools such as ETAS, dSPACE, or similar platforms
Experience with MIL, SIL, and HIL development and validation environments
Experience with vehicle integration, prototype development, and cross-functional issue resolution
Experience serving as a technical lead or subject matter expert within a controls or software domain
Familiarity with agile development methods and automotive product development processes
What Will Make You Successful
You think systematically and can connect requirements, controls logic, software implementation, and vehicle behavior
You are comfortable working in ambiguity and can turn early concepts into executable technical solutions
You collaborate well across teams and help elevate engineering best practices
You take ownership of technical issues and drive them through resolution
You bring both depth in a core controls area and the flexibility to support fast-moving prototype work
