What is a props manager?

Props Managers are responsible for sourcing, organizing, and maintaining all physical objects (props) used on stage or set in theater, film, or television productions. They collaborate closely with directors, designers, and crew to ensure that each prop aligns with the artistic vision and is available when needed for rehearsals and performances. In addition to acquiring props, Props Managers may also be involved in creating custom items, managing budgets, and overseeing the safe handling and storage of all props. Their role is essential in helping bring authenticity and detail to a production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a props manager?

To thrive as a Props Manager, you need a solid understanding of stagecraft, prop construction, organization, and inventory management, often supported by experience in theater production or a related field. Familiarity with tools like CAD software, inventory databases, and hand/power tools is common, and OSHA safety certification may be required. Strong problem-solving, creativity, time management, and communication skills help manage deadlines and collaborate with directors and designers. These abilities are crucial for ensuring productions run smoothly, props are safe and authentic, and creative visions are realized on stage.

How does a props manager typically collaborate with other departments during a production?

A Props Manager works closely with directors, set designers, costume teams, and stage management to ensure all props align with the artistic vision and logistical needs of the production. Coordination often involves attending production meetings, participating in rehearsals to understand prop usage, and communicating frequently with other departments to address changes or special requirements. This collaborative approach helps maintain continuity, ensures safety, and supports efficient problem-solving during both the rehearsal and performance phases.

About the Role
At Straub Collaborative, we produce high-volume e-commerce content for leading retail brands. As a Stylist, you'll lead the execution of on-figure styling-translating creative direction and brand guidelines into clean, consistent, camera-ready looks.
You'll work closely with photographers, art directors, and production teams to keep shoots moving efficiently while maintaining a high standard of quality across every shot.
This role is equal parts creative execution and operational discipline-ideal for someone who can balance both.

On-Set Styling Execution
  • Style apparel and accessories to align with brand guidelines and creative direction
  • Execute on-figure styling across high-volume shoots with speed and consistency
  • Direct model changes and manage transitions between looks

  • Stay highly engaged on repetitive shoots while maintaining quality standards
  • Identify opportunities to improve speed, consistency, and workflow on set
Pre-Production & Shoot Preparation
  • Complete pre-shoot prep including product organization, steaming, footwear styling, and mannequin setup
  • Partner with production, photographers, and studio leadership to align on shoot plans
  • Build and document styling standards, references, and guides
  • Contribute to pre-production meetings and post-shoot reviews
Wardrobe, Props & Inventory
  • Build and manage wardrobe pulls, accessories, and props
  • Coordinate temporary acquisitions and ensure accurate returns
  • Maintain styling inventory (mannequins, props, tools) and flag repair/replacement needs
  • Ensure prep areas, on-set zones, and storage remain clean and organized
  • Support product flow throughout the studio lifecycle
Workflow & Studio Operations
  • Maintain pacing to meet production timelines without sacrificing quality
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with stylists, photographers, and producers
  • Communicate clearly on product readiness, styling needs, and issues
  • Support continuous improvement of studio processes and workflows
Administrative & Project Support
  • Complete production documentation (daily summaries, time tracking, expense reporting)
  • Support shipping, returns, and product tracking as needed
  • Adhere to studio processes across the full production lifecycle
What You Bring
  • 2+ years of experience in styling, visual merchandising, studio production, or related roles
  • Strong eye for styling, proportion, and product presentation
  • Ability to work quickly without sacrificing consistency or quality
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Clear communication and collaborative working style
  • Adaptability in fast-paced, high-volume production environments
  • Proficiency with basic tools (Excel, web-based systems); familiarity with studio workflows preferred
  • Experience in e-commerce or studio production environments strongly preferred
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and move throughout the day (cement studio floors)
  • Ability to lift, push, or carry up to 50 lbs
  • Repetitive hand use (steaming, pinning, prepping, tagging)
  • Ability to work in active studio and warehouse environments
Work Environment
  • Fast-paced e-commerce production studio
  • On-set and warehouse environment
  • Work performed under production lighting and active shoot conditions
Additional Requirements
  • Must be local to the Portland area or able to commute
  • Flexible schedule, including early prep and extended shoot days as needed
