Job description

Purpose Under supervision of the Chief Building Official performs specialized functions associated with enforcing city codes, ordinances, and building codes pertaining to litter, overgrowth, abandoned vehicles, dilapidated structures, dumpsites, and care of premise. Essential Functions Performs inspections of structures and property for conformance with applicable codes and ordinances as directed by the Building Official and Code Enforcement Coordinator; Perform work both indoors and outdoors with the possibility of being exposed to adverse weather conditions; Maintains records of inspections and makes photographic records of violations; Prepares or completes various forms, reports, inspection reports, notices, citations, affidavits, and court disposition forms; Presents cases in City court or dilapidation hearings and property maintenance hearings; Maintain an effective work relationship with supervisor, employees, and other city departments, city council members, board members, attorneys, property owners, the public and other individuals; and Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications Knowledge of Municipal Codes and procedures; Effective communicator both written and orally; Ability to inspect property to determine if unsafe and unsanitary conditions are present; Ability to explain City Ordinances and regulations to property owners; Ability to recognize problems, initiate action, and explain same to property owners; Ability to work strict deadlines; Ability to use independent judgement and work with little direct supervision when necessary; Strong computer skills in Microsoft programs (i.e. Word and Excel) and Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to use IPAD & attach photographs to case

Education and Experience High school graduate or high school equivalent. Certification as a Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector by the International Code Council must be obtained within 12 months of hire date. Certification in Legal & Management module by the International Code Council, and Property Maintenance & Housing Code Official preferred.

No minimum experience required. Must have a valid TN/VA Driver's License.
