How do you become a prop trader?

To become a prop trader, individuals typically need a strong understanding of financial markets, trading strategies, and risk management. Many firms require relevant experience, a proven track record, or passing specific assessments, and some may prefer candidates with a background in finance, economics, or related fields. Developing skills with trading platforms and maintaining discipline are also important for success in proprietary trading roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a prop trader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Prop Trader, you need a solid understanding of financial markets, quantitative analysis, and risk management, often supported by a degree in finance, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with trading platforms, algorithmic trading systems, and certifications like CFA or Series 7 can be highly advantageous. Strong decision-making, discipline, and the ability to manage stress set top performers apart in this high-pressure environment. These skills and qualities are essential for maximizing profitability while effectively controlling risk and adapting to rapidly changing market conditions.

What are some common challenges faced by prop traders and how can new hires effectively overcome them?

Prop traders often face high-pressure environments due to the fast-paced nature of financial markets and the need to quickly adapt to changing conditions. Managing risk while pursuing profitability is a constant challenge, especially for those new to the role. New hires can overcome these challenges by leveraging mentorship from experienced traders, rigorously backtesting their strategies, and maintaining disciplined risk management practices. Collaboration within the team and continuous learning are also key to developing the resilience and adaptability needed for long-term success.

What is prop trading?

Prop trading, short for proprietary trading, refers to when a financial firm or commercial bank invests for its own direct gain instead of earning commission by trading on behalf of clients. In prop trading, firms use their own capital to buy and sell financial instruments, such as stocks, bonds, derivatives, or currencies, with the goal of generating profits. This type of trading allows firms to benefit directly from market movements and their own trading strategies, but it also involves significant risks. Prop traders are typically highly skilled professionals who use sophisticated strategies and technology to gain an edge in the markets.

How much do prop traders make?

Prop traders, or proprietary traders, typically earn a base salary plus a performance-based bonus that can significantly increase total compensation. On average, prop traders can make from $50,000 to over $500,000 annually, depending on their skill, experience, trading capital, and profitability. Successful traders often use advanced trading platforms and risk management strategies to maximize earnings.

Job description

At My Funded Futures, weโ€™re transforming the world of proprietary trading by giving traders the capital, tools, and community they need to succeed.

We blend innovation, transparency, and performance to create opportunity โ€” helping traders scale faster and smarter. If youโ€™re passionate about fintech, financial markets, and data-driven growth, youโ€™ll fit right in.

Explore our open roles below and see how you can help us shape the future of funded trading.

Own the Product. Own the Edge.

MyFundedFutures isnโ€™t just another prop firm. Weโ€™re building the infrastructure, tools, and trading experience that funded traders actually rely on every single day. We move fast, we ship bold, and we donโ€™t do boring. If youโ€™re a product leader who gets energized by owning a roadmap across multiple businesses instead of babysitting one feature backlog, we want to talk to you.

This is a rare shot to define product strategy at the intersection of finance, trading technology, and internet-native growth. No stuffy bank product org here. Think Blue #3A82F7, Obsidian, Gold: bold, confident, built for traders who live and breathe the charts, and for a team that wants product decisions made with the same speed and conviction.

What You\'ll Do

  • Own product strategy and roadmap across our full ecosystem: trading platforms and prop firm evaluation/funding programs
  • Translate business priorities from Executive leadership into a prioritized, sequenced product roadmap across multiple concurrent work streams
  • Partner with Engineering to scope, spec, and ship features that actually move the needle on activation, funding rates, and retention
  • Own the trading platform experience end-to-end: account provisioning, payouts, drawdown rules, platform integrations, and the trader-facing UX around all of it
  • Build out product infrastructure, execution, and trader experience
  • Define and track the KPIs that matter for each business line, and hold the team (and yourself) accountable to them
  • Run point on vendor and platform dependency decisions, including build vs. buy and single-point-of-failure risk
  • Turn complex trading mechanics into product decisions that are simple to execute and easy for the business to explain
  • Stay plugged into prop trading, trading platforms, and fintech product trends

What You Bring

  • A track record of owning product strategy and execution in fintech, trading platforms, brokerage, or similarly regulated/technical spaces
  • Comfort owning multiple product lines simultaneously without losing rigor on any of them
  • Strong technical fluency: you can go deep with Engineering on architecture and dependency tradeoffs, not just talk in roadmaps
  • Genuine interest in trading, markets, and prop firm or brokerage mechanics; you don\'t need to have traded, but you need to understand drawdown, payouts, funded accounts, and execution at a real level
  • Sharp prioritization instincts in a fast-moving, resource-constrained environment
  • Comfort operating with ambiguity and shifting priorities across a small, fast-scaling company
  • A thrive-in-chaos mindset: you\'re energized by ownership without a large team behind you, and the best idea wins, not the loudest title

Bonus Points

  • Experience building product for a prop trading firm, introducing broker, or trading platform
  • Familiarity with futures trading platform integrations
  • Experience navigating compliance/regulatory constraints in a product context
  • A track record of product decisions that measurably reduced vendor dependency or single points of failure

Why Us

  • Ground-floor opportunity to own product across a multi-business ecosystem at one of the fastest-growing names in funded futures trading
  • A team that moves with startup speed and cares about doing things right
  • Real ownership: your roadmap decisions will directly shape three interconnected businesses, not one narrow product surface
  • Competitive compensation and benefits
  • A culture built on edge, execution, and no fluff
