What is a proof operator in banking?

Proof Operators in banking are responsible for verifying and processing financial documents, such as checks and deposit slips, to ensure accuracy before they enter the banking system. They operate specialized equipment to encode, balance, and reconcile transactions, helping to detect and correct errors efficiently. Their role is crucial in maintaining the integrity and accuracy of a bank’s daily financial operations. Proof Operators typically work in the back office and must have keen attention to detail and strong numerical skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a proof operator in banking?

To thrive as a Proof Operator in banking, you need strong numerical accuracy, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with proof machines, data entry systems, and banking software is typically required. Reliability, time management, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure are important soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate transaction processing and maintaining smooth bank operations.

What are some common challenges faced by proof operators in banking, and how can they be addressed?

    • Drive Revenue & Adoption: Accountable for meeting commercial KPIs, including transaction volume growth, product adoption rates.
    • Packaging & Pricing Structuring: Partner with product management to design competitive commercial packaging and pricing frameworks that maximize profitability while remaining highly attractive to corporate treasurers.
  • Coverage Partnership & Sales Enablement:
    • Strategic Coverage Alignment: Act as the primary payments specialist partner to Industry Coverage teams, systematically identifying high-potential payment opportunities within their existing client portfolios and by expanding their client portfolios.
    • Sales Readiness & Upskilling: Design and deliver comprehensive enablement programs, playbooks, and training sessions to equip Coverage teams with technical fluency, competitive positioning, and discovery questions needed to qualify payments opportunities.
    • Joint Client Engagement: Co-pilot high-value client meetings alongside Coverage, acting as the technical and structuring authority to build credibility, handle complex objections, and accelerate the sales cycle.
    • Pipeline Management & Joint Planning: Conduct regular portfolio reviews with Coverage leads to map out target names, build a robust pipeline of operational activity, and coordinate proactive client outreach.
  • Deal Structuring & Mandate Winning:
    • Bespoke Solution Structuring: Collaborate with Coverage to diagnose complex corporate treasury challenges and structure tailored, end-to-end payment architectures (e.g., unified payments orchestration, ERP/TMS integrations, and liquidity optimization setups).
    • Operational Book Expansion: Focus on winning operating mandates that secure the client's primary clearing, cash management, and transactional flows, ensuring long-term, sticky operational balances and transaction fees.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 7+ years of experience in transaction banking, corporate treasury, or payments solution engineering, with a proven track record of driving commercial growth and expanding operational books of business.
  • 5+ years of experience in a client-facing solution structuring, sales enablement, or technical product specialist role, with a history of directly partnering with Coverage (Relationship Managers and Corporate Bankers).
  • Demonstrated success in winning high-value corporate payments mandates and securing primary clearing and cash management flows through structured RFPs and competitive bids.
  • Deep technical fluency in global payment rails, specifically US payments rails.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience designing competitive pricing frameworks, commercial packaging, and incentive programs to drive product adoption and maximize profitability.
