Projects Manager information

What does a projects manager do?

A Projects Manager is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing projects within an organization to ensure they are completed on time, within scope, and on budget. They coordinate with teams, allocate resources, manage timelines, and communicate with stakeholders to track progress and address any issues that arise. Projects Managers play a key role in ensuring project objectives align with organizational goals and are delivered successfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a projects manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Projects Manager, you need strong project management skills, leadership abilities, and a background in business or a related field, often supported by a bachelor's degree or higher. Familiarity with project management software such as Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira, and certifications like PMP or PRINCE2, are commonly required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help you motivate teams and adapt to dynamic project demands. These competencies ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope and budget, and foster a productive, collaborative environment.

How does a projects manager typically balance multiple projects and ensure deadlines are met?

A Projects Manager often oversees several projects simultaneously, which requires strong organizational and prioritization skills. They rely on project management tools, regular progress meetings, and clear communication to track milestones and address potential bottlenecks early. Effective delegation and collaboration with cross-functional teams are also key, as Projects Managers must align resources and expectations while adapting to shifting priorities. This dynamic environment encourages continual learning and offers opportunities to develop leadership and strategic planning abilities.

Market Development Projects Manager

(Permanent Position)

Who is the CMP Group within Global R&D?

The CMP team works closely with construction and manufacturing customers in North America to promote the use of steel through technical support activities including early vendor involvement (EVI), material and product application development and technical support at the manufacturing plant level. To ensure ArcelorMittal obtains our share of new business, engineers look at new markets for steel, market trends, and how to apply steel more effectively. We also work closely with industry and regulatory organizations to ensure steel is the material of choice for construction and manufacturing end uses. We have representatives in several locations in Canada and in the United States and will work closely with ArcelorMittal Europe to provide support to our global customers.

The Role:

As a Market Development Projects Manager in the CMP group, your primary responsibility will be to identify and engage in new business opportunities, new product development needs, and new steel solutions so that sheet steel products remain the material of choice, and ArcelorMittal the preferred steel supplier. You will do this through building strong relationships with our construction and manufacturing customers throughout North America, engage industry through various trade associations and identify and lead technical support activities that create value for ArcelorMittal and its customers.

    • Achieve technical source approvals from customers to allow for the commercial supply of products, ensuring all approvals are consistent with AM North America commercial group needs. This includes recommending the development of new qualification procedures and characterization techniques.
    • Analyze customer products and processes in a team and recommend and implement cost savings opportunities or product improvements (co-engineering), by applying sound engineering principles independently, or by leading a team of subject matter experts.
    • Maintain awareness of regulatory codes, standards and material specifications to ensure AM North America product capabilities comply and negotiate changes with agencies and customers so these requirements do not impair the profitability of AM North America products in the marketplace.
    • Participate in trade association and regulatory agency activities to ensure steel remains a viable material choice for our customers’ product needs. Participate in the development of and recommend responses to the opportunities in steel market growth and threats to exclude steel from the market.
    • Facilitate and provide local expertise of the application technology capabilities of Global R&D, and interface with our customers to promote and utilize these technologies to create value for the customer and AM.
    • Determine the value creation for assigned projects, to be used by AM North America commercial teams, when negotiating commercial contracts with AM North America customers.
    • Initiate customer contacts and respond to wide-ranging customer inquiries (e.g. material characteristics, specifications, trial steel supply, testing, technical seminars, etc.)
