What is projection mapping?

Projection mapping is a technology used to project images or videos onto irregularly shaped objects or surfaces, such as buildings, stages, or sculptures, rather than traditional flat screens. This technique transforms common objects into dynamic visual displays by aligning the projected content precisely to the contours of the chosen surface. It's widely used in advertising, entertainment, art installations, and live events to create immersive and visually stunning experiences. Projection mapping requires specialized software and careful planning to ensure the visuals fit perfectly onto the intended surface.

What are projection mapping jobs?

Projection mapping allows you to project a video, animation, or display on a three-dimensional surface or object to create amazing displays. Most jobs tend to fall under an AV systems role, such as an engineer or designer. Your duties then include the vast scope of potential video projection projects, from design to installation to maintenance. Your responsibilities include software development, creating drawings for installations, traveling to locations for installation and orientation of the display, managing your hardware inventory, and liaising with the creative team, artist, and customer. Travel is a significant part of projection mapping jobs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a projection mapping specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Projection Mapping Specialist, you need expertise in visual design, animation, and a solid understanding of spatial geometry, often supported by a background in multimedia arts or related fields. Familiarity with specialized software like Adobe After Effects, MadMapper, and hardware such as high-lumen projectors is crucial for creating seamless projections. Strong problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration skills help you adapt designs to complex surfaces and work closely with clients and technical teams. These competencies are essential to deliver visually stunning, technically precise installations that meet client and audience expectations.

How does a projection mapping specialist typically collaborate with other creative and technical team members during a project?

Projection mapping specialists often work closely with a variety of professionals, including lighting designers, animators, audio engineers, and event coordinators. Collaboration starts early in the planning phase to ensure the mapped visuals align seamlessly with the physical environment and overall event vision. Throughout the project, specialists share drafts and test projections, adapting their work based on feedback from the team and technical constraints. This collaborative approach helps ensure that both the artistic and technical aspects of the projection mapping are fully integrated for a successful final presentation.

What is the difference between Projection Mapping vs Video Editor?

AspectProjection MappingVideo Editor
Required CredentialsTechnical skills, software proficiency, sometimes certifications in projection or multimediaVideo editing software skills, often a degree in film or media
Work EnvironmentEvent venues, outdoor spaces, stage productions, immersive installationsPost-production studios, editing suites, media companies
Industry UsageEvent production, entertainment, advertising, art installationsFilm, television, online content, advertising

Projection Mapping and Video Editors share skills in multimedia software, but Projection Mapping focuses on creating visual displays on physical surfaces, often for live events, while Video Editors work on post-production editing of video content. Both roles are essential in multimedia production but serve different stages and environments within the industry.

TITLE

Design Engineer, Show Production

LOCATION

Burbank, CA

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a Design Engineer who is ready to get their hands dirty building illusions so convincing that guests won't believe their own eyes. We are looking for a creative problem solver with sharp engineering skills who can thrive on projects where minimal instruction and direction is provided to achieve desired results. This role reports to the Technical Show Production Lead, and will take on effects design and fabrication work that has a direct impact on projects with high-profile clients. You will perform a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, the design, engineering, fabrication, and installation of special effects and illusions for various attractions and immersive experiences as required. The Design Engineer will gain hands-on experience across the full life of an effect and sharpen their craft as both a designer and an engineer.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Design and engineer integrated show technical specialty elements, including special effects, illusions, show action equipment, animated figures, and interactive elements, across the full life of a project, from initial concept through installation, programming, and turnover to operations.

Work within an assigned budget and schedule, flagging risks and communicating trade-offs proactively rather than after the fact.

Create, maintain, and communicate the facility interface data (power, structural, mounting, controls, and other requirements) that other disciplines depend on to properly plan around each element.

Coordinate closely with show set, ride, media, and controls engineering to keep specialty elements properly integrated as the design evolves.

Produce fabrication-ready drawings and models, in Fusion, that fabricators and other disciplines can build from without guesswork.

Program, tune, and cue each element's control systems on-site so it runs correctly and in sync with the rest of the show.

Troubleshoot and resolve problems in the field, often under a tight schedule and with limited resources.

Document each finished element clearly and hand it off to operations with what they need to maintain it long-term.

Build every element to be safe, reliable, and low-maintenance under continuous daily operation.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Exceptional ability in both design and engineering. This role demands real mastery of both, not one grafted onto the other.

A background that fuses rigorous creative and technical training (for example, a design education with substantial engineering coursework, or an engineering education paired with a serious creative practice).

Advanced CAD fluency in Fusion; strong proficiency in Adobe Illustrator.

Strong command of electronic components and circuit design, with the ability to hand-code embedded systems (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or similar) without relying on AI-generated code.

Accomplished hands-on fabricator, building, wiring, and programming show technical elements at a professional standard.

Proficient across traditional manufacturing (machining, sheet metal forming, extrusion, injection molding, grinding, welding) and rapid manufacturing methods (3D printing and related rapid prototyping techniques).

Demonstrated ability to work within project budgets and schedules, and to communicate clearly when either is at risk.

Comfortable owning technical communication with other disciplines, including facility and interface requirements.

Collaborates effectively with project teams, vendors, and other technical disciplines.

A portfolio demonstrating special effects, mechanisms, or other show technical elements personally designed and built. Please include one with your application.

Willing and able to travel and work on-site through installation and commissioning.

2 to 5 years of relevant experience, or less with strong adjacent experience and clear aptitude.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, with Mechatronics coursework preferred.

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science coursework.

Able to select and engineer the right technical approach across mechanical and electromechanical systems, motion and robotics, pneumatics, optics, lighting, and water, fog, and fire effects.

Solid grounding in statics, dynamics, and material science, including free body diagrams and basic FEA.

Skilled in designing and building precision jigs and assembly tooling.

Experienced in urethane and epoxy casting and finishing.

Applies lean manufacturing principles to minimize waste and build repeatable process.

Familiarity with QLab, projection mapping software, or other stage-technology suites

Detail-oriented

Exemplary writing and communication skills

Ability to manage through conflict, complexity and to problem-solve issues to resolution

Ability to understand the needs of the client and to manage relationships between the owner/operator.

Ability to comfortably and effectively communicate, both verbally in presentation and conversation, and written in correspondence to project team, vendors, consultants and AOA partner.

Ability to give direction, adapt to change, establish relationships, work in a team environment, and produce results.

ZBrush, Rhino, or other 3D modeling and sculpting tools.

Fluency in Python or any C variant.

Experience with factory or site acceptance test procedures, or with scopes of work and proposals.

Familiarity with UL508A, permitting, or supporting engineering documentation such as NRTL certification.
