What is a project tester?

Project Testers are professionals responsible for evaluating software, systems, or processes within a project to ensure they meet specified requirements and function as intended. They design and execute test cases, identify bugs or issues, and collaborate with developers and project managers to resolve problems. Project Testers play a crucial role in quality assurance, helping to deliver reliable and effective products or solutions by systematically verifying and validating project deliverables.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project tester?

To thrive as a Project Tester, you need a solid understanding of software testing methodologies, attention to detail, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Selenium, JIRA, test automation frameworks, and bug-tracking systems is highly beneficial. Strong analytical skills, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help testers collaborate with development teams and clearly document issues. These competencies ensure software quality, reduce defects, and support successful project delivery.

How does a project tester typically collaborate with developers and project managers during the software development lifecycle?

Project Testers work closely with developers and project managers throughout the development process. They participate in requirements reviews, communicate test results and bugs, and provide feedback to ensure quality standards are met. Regular meetings and agile ceremonies, such as daily stand-ups or sprint reviews, foster a collaborative environment where testers clarify requirements, prioritize defects, and align on release goals. This teamwork helps identify issues early, streamline testing efforts, and ensure that project milestones are achieved efficiently.

Job description

We are seeking a detail-oriented, adaptable, and hands-on Functional Tester to join our Quality Assurance team as a vendor/contractor.

The ideal candidate will be deeply involved in executing functional tests, ensuring that the delivered software meets rigorous quality standards, and actively participating throughout the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). As the project evolves, the successful candidate must be willing and eager to learn additional skills, tools, and processes to support project needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Test Execution: Design, develop, and execute hands-on functional test scripts, test cases, and scenarios based on system requirements and user stories.
  • SDLC Integration: Actively participate in all phases of the SDLC, from requirements gathering and design to testing and deployment.
  • Defect Management: Identify, log, document, and track software defects to resolution using project defect management tools.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with developers, business analysts, and project managers to clarify requirements, report test results, and ensure alignment on quality goals.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure all functional testing activities adhere to the defined IT Project Quality Assurance and Testing Strategy for the FL OBIS Modernization project.

    Required Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of proven, hands-on experience in functional software testing.
  • SDLC Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and standard quality assurance methodologies (e.g., Agile, Waterfall).
  • Testing Toolset: Hands-on experience with test management and defect tracking tools.
Specifically, experience using Jira and testing add-ins (such as QMetry/TestRay/Xray) is highly preferred, though experience with similar industry-standard tools (such as ALM, TestRail, or Azure DevOps) is acceptable.
  • Adaptability & Continuous Learning: A strong willingness and ability to quickly learn and adopt additional skills, tools, or methodologies as required by the evolving needs of the project.
  • Soft Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail and the ability to communicate issues clearly to cross-functional teams.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Domain Expertise: Prior experience, background, or working knowledge of corrections or offender-based information systems is a plus.
  • Performance Testing: Experience with or exposure to performance testing methodologies and tools is a strong plus.
  • Public Sector Experience: Familiarity with state government IT modernization projects or COTS implementations.
