Employer & Industry UsageVarious industries including construction, marketingIT, software, technology sectors

The main difference is that a Project Manager oversees projects broadly across industries, focusing on management skills, while a Technical Project Manager combines project management with technical expertise, often working closely with IT or software development teams. The Technical Project Manager role requires additional technical certifications and a deeper understanding of technical processes, making it suitable for tech-heavy projects.

How do Technical Project Managers typically balance technical problem-solving with project coordination responsibilities?

Technical Project Managers often juggle both technical and managerial duties, which requires strong prioritization and communication skills. They are responsible for translating business requirements into actionable tasks, troubleshooting technical issues with development teams, and ensuring project milestones are met. Collaboration is key, as they frequently work with software engineers, QA testers, and stakeholders to keep projects on track. Balancing these aspects involves staying organized, delegating technical tasks appropriately, and maintaining open lines of communication with all team members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technical Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Project Manager, you need a solid understanding of project management methodologies (such as Agile or Waterfall), technical acumen relevant to the industry, and a bachelor’s degree in a related field—often supplemented by certifications like PMP or Scrum Master. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Microsoft Project, and collaboration platforms is critical for planning, tracking, and reporting project progress. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication set standout professionals apart by enabling them to bridge the gap between technical teams and stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are vital for delivering projects on time, within scope, and ensuring alignment between business objectives and technical solutions.

Job description

Northland Control Systems is seeking a Technical Project Manager to join our Professional Services team and lead complex, custom security and technology projects with budgets of up to $2M. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced environments, enjoys solving complex technical challenges, and brings deep expertise in physical security systems and application engineering.

You will play a critical role delivering high-impact, global projects for leading enterprise clients and driving successful outcomes across technically complex environments.

About the Role
Reporting to the Director of Professional Services, you will own the end-to-end delivery of technical and custom projects—from initial scoping through final execution. This includes defining project scope, managing budgets and timelines, coordinating cross-functional teams, and ensuring successful delivery across multiple stakeholders.

You will serve as a key liaison between internal stakeholders, customers, and external partners, providing leadership, direction, and accountability throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery & Execution

  • Lead full lifecycle delivery of complex technical and application engineering projects
  • Develop and manage comprehensive project plans, including scope, timelines, budgets, and resource allocation
  • Drive execution with a focus on risk mitigation, issue resolution, and proactive decision-making
  • Partner with Integration Project Managers on RFQs, planning, and strategic resource alignment
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget while maintaining high quality standards

Technical & Client Engagement

  • Lead the development and review of Statements of Work (SOWs) and RFQs
  • Act as a primary point of contact for customers on technical deliverables and project direction
  • Facilitate system design reviews and lead client-facing discussions
  • Provide clear, concise project reporting and executive-level updates as needed
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers and cross-functional teams

Operational Excellence

  • Forecast project and resource needs across multiple concurrent initiatives
  • Maintain strong cost controls and drive accountability for financial performance
  • Support the development of scalable service offerings within Advanced Services
  • Contribute to process improvements, standardization, and best practices across the organization

What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone who takes ownership, operates with a high level of accountability, and brings a strong, solutions-oriented mindset. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity, making informed decisions, and influencing outcomes across teams. You are detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to manage multiple complex priorities while maintaining clear communication with stakeholders at all levels.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Construction Management, or related field
  • 5+ years of project management experience (PMP or equivalent strongly preferred)
  • 5+ years of application engineering or technical systems experience
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder technical projects
  • Experience with physical security systems (Lenel, Genetec, Software House, S2, etc.) strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of system architecture, integrations, and enterprise environments

Why Join Northland

  • Work on complex, high-visibility projects with global enterprise clients
  • Be part of a growing, fast-paced organization with strong career advancement opportunities
  • Contribute to innovative security solutions across data centers, campuses, and global enterprises
  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits including healthcare, 401(k), and PTO
