What is a project manager scrum master?

Project Manager Scrum Masters are professionals who combine the roles of traditional project management with the responsibilities of a Scrum Master in Agile teams. They oversee project planning, execution, and delivery while also facilitating Scrum ceremonies, removing obstacles, and fostering team collaboration. Their goal is to ensure that projects are completed on time and within scope, while also supporting Agile best practices and continuous improvement within the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager scrum master?

To thrive as a Project Manager Scrum Master, you need a solid understanding of Agile methodologies, project management principles, and a relevant certification such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or PMI-ACP. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Asana and experience with Agile frameworks are typically required. Outstanding communication, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills set exceptional Scrum Masters apart. These skills ensure teams are productive, projects stay on track, and Agile values are upheld for continuous improvement.

How do project manager scrum masters balance facilitating agile processes with managing stakeholder expectations?

Project Manager Scrum Masters often juggle the dual responsibilities of guiding scrum teams through agile ceremonies and ensuring stakeholders are informed and aligned on project progress. This involves frequent communication, transparent reporting, and effective backlog management to prioritize work that delivers business value. They typically set clear expectations with stakeholders about agile timelines and adapt plans as needed based on team velocity and feedback. Success in this role requires both strong facilitation skills and the ability to navigate competing priorities in a collaborative environment.

What is the difference between Project Manager Scrum Master vs Project Coordinator?

The Project Manager Scrum Master focuses on facilitating Agile processes and coaching teams within Scrum frameworks, often in IT or software projects. The Project Coordinator supports project execution by organizing tasks and tracking progress across various industries. While both roles require strong communication skills and some certifications, the Scrum Master emphasizes Agile methodologies, whereas the Project Coordinator handles broader project support functions.

Are project manager Scrum Masters being phased out?

Project Manager Scrum Masters remain in demand as organizations adopt Agile methodologies, with their roles evolving to focus on facilitating Scrum practices, removing obstacles, and promoting team collaboration. While some traditional project management tasks are shifting toward Agile roles, Scrum Masters continue to be essential in Agile environments that require certification and strong facilitation skills.

Who gets paid more, project manager or project manager Scrum Master?

Generally, project managers tend to have higher salaries than Scrum Masters because they have broader responsibilities, including project planning, budgeting, and stakeholder management. Scrum Masters focus on facilitating Agile processes and team collaboration, often earning slightly less but may increase their pay with certifications like Certified ScrumMaster (CSM). Salary differences can vary based on industry, experience, and location.

Job description

What You'll Be Doing

The Agile Delivery Specialist supports and serves the Agile Release Trains (ARTs). This individual is an embedded Agile practitioner who works hands-on with teams to deliver with quality and consistency, facilitating ceremonies, coaching good practices, and ensuring teams have the clarity, tools, and support they need to succeed. Working in close partnership with the RTE, this person supports the day-to-day coordination of the ARTs such as agendas, scheduling, meeting logistics, and cross-team follow-up.

What We're Looking For

Support Agile Release Trains (ARTs) and teams in applying Agile, Scrum, and SAFe practices to improve delivery effectiveness and consistency. Facilitate ART and team-level meetings as needed, including PI Planning, Iteration Planning, Sprint Reviews, Retrospectives, and Scrum of Scrums. Partner with the RTE to coordinate ART agendas, schedules, meeting logistics, and cross-team follow-up. Facilitate leadership meetings and working sessions, managing discussion, conflict, decisions, and follow-through. Coach Product Owners and team members on Agile values, Scrum practices, SAFe principles, and effective collaboration. Coach teams on writing high-quality user stories with clear acceptance criteria and Definition of Ready expectations. Lead story-splitting and decomposition sessions to turn large stories and features into deliverable increments of value. Partner with Product Owners to define and refine features aligned to business outcomes and ART priorities. Promote consistent backlog hygiene, estimation practices, and readiness standards across teams. Identify, track, and help remove impediments, dependencies, and delivery risks, escalating when appropriate. Drive continuous improvement by capturing retrospective actions, tracking commitments, and helping teams implement improvements. Serve as a Jira subject matter expert by configuring boards, creating dashboards and reports, maintaining visibility, and guiding effective tool usage. Consolidate and review delivery metrics across ARTs, using AI-assisted analysis to surface trends, risks, and improvement opportunities for the RTE and leadership.

What You'll Bring

Proven expertise in user story writing, story splitting, and feature definition - including hands-on experience helping teams meet a Definition of Ready and maintain a healthy, well-ordered backlog. Deep knowledge of the Scrum framework, including all ceremonies, artifacts, accountabilities, and how they connect to team health and delivery outcomes. Demonstrated ability to coach and grow Product Owners and teams - helping them level up their craft, not just follow a process. Experience driving Agile maturity across multiple teams simultaneously, influencing without authority and sustaining improvement over time. Familiarity with SAFe principles and ART-level practices including PI Planning, ART cadences, and program increment execution.

Education & Experience

Minimum Required: Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Project Management or related field or equivalent relevant experience. Minimum Required: 3+ years of experience as a Scrum Master, Agile Coach, or Agile Delivery practitioner in a scaled Agile or SAFe environment - with enough reps to facilitate and support teams confidently.

Licenses & Credentials

Minimum Required: SAFe certification (SSM or SP, or equivalent). SPC or RTE a plus, but not expected at this level.

Systems & Technology

Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook. Strong Jira proficiency - board configuration, reporting, backlog management, dashboard creation, and metrics tracking. Experience with additional Agile tooling is a plus (Kendis, miro, whiteboard, etc).
