What does a Project Manager in Robotics do?

A Project Manager in Robotics oversees the planning, execution, and completion of robotics projects. They coordinate teams of engineers, designers, and other specialists to ensure that projects meet technical requirements, stay within budget, and are delivered on schedule. They also manage risk, communicate with stakeholders, and ensure compliance with relevant industry standards. Their role is crucial in bridging the gap between technical development and business objectives, ensuring that robotics solutions are successfully implemented.

How does a Project Manager in Robotics typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

As a Project Manager in Robotics, you will regularly coordinate with engineers, software developers, procurement specialists, and quality assurance teams to ensure the seamless integration of hardware and software components. Effective communication and regular status meetings are crucial for aligning project milestones and addressing any technical or scheduling challenges early on. Additionally, you may interact with clients or end-users to gather requirements and provide updates, making strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Project Manager in Robotics, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager in Robotics, you need a strong background in engineering or computer science, experience in project management, and familiarity with robotics systems. Proficiency with project management tools (such as Jira, Asana, or MS Project), understanding of robotics software/hardware, and certifications like PMP or Agile are typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you manage cross-functional teams and adapt to evolving project needs. These skills and qualifications ensure projects are delivered efficiently, meet technical standards, and foster innovation in a complex, fast-paced robotics environment.

Job description

Job Description:

Jewett Automation is a fast-growing industrial automation and systems integration company seeking a Project Manager to lead and motivate teams of engineers and technicians to execute the design and construction of custom-engineered automation equipment. The successful candidate will be proficient with various factory automation systems and will thrive in a collaborative environment, demonstrating critical thinking, superior problem-solving, a strong work ethic, and excellent communication and organizational skills.

This is an exempt position with benefits reporting to the Director of Project Management. The compensation will be commensurate with experience. The position is based in Richmond, Virginia, and requires regular onsite, in-office presence, with travel expected as needed to support project execution, factory and site acceptance testing, and customer engagements.

Responsibilities:

  • Build Jewett Automationโ€™s brand as a customer-focused company by delivering exceptional customer service and timely responses.
  • Manage projects to achieve a defined schedule, scope, and budget.
  • Own schedule planning and execution, ensuring all project activities align with committed customer and internal delivery dates.
  • Analyze financial trends (labor burn, material consumption, ETC, EAC) to anticipate risk
  • Identify potential project risks and lead the development of mitigation plans.
  • Be the customerโ€™s point of contact on projects and communicate any changes between the customer and the project team.
  • Serve as the Voice of the Customer and primary customer interface, ensuring requirements, commitments, and changes are accurately represented, documented, and delivered.
  • Balance the quoted equipment and the customerโ€™s changing needs to manage scope creep.
  • Provide project updates to the Customer and to Jewett Automation management.
  • Actively protect project margin through disciplined scope and cost management.
  • Collaborate across the organization to manage the development, evaluation, approval, and implementation of automation equipment designs.
  • Oversee product/machine construction and testing to ensure the project achieves the specified scope.
  • Work with procurement to understand how potential supply chain issues may impact the schedule.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Experience managing a portfolio of concurrent projects with a combined contract value of approximately $15 million.
  • 7+ years of experience as a successful project manager.
  • Demonstrated management experience within a manufacturing and custom equipment design-and-build environment.
  • Working knowledge of Project Management methods and processes.
  • Experience in managing and communicating project financials.
  • Experience in industrial automation, with robotics and automation machinery design background beneficial.
  • Strong fundamental engineering knowledge. An engineering degree or equivalent experience is a plus.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate strong financial and commercial acumen within an engineer-to-order or capital equipment environment.
  • Proactive project leadership mindset, drives execution, resolves issues, and advances work rather than waiting to report status.
  • Execution-first orientation, prioritizes removing blockers, securing decisions, and pushing deliverables over passive reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent the Voice of the Customer while balancing contractual, financial, and execution realities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated history of successfully executing projects against committed schedule, financial, and scope targets.
  • Ability to travel during Site Acceptance Testing.
