What is a project manager MBA?

A Project Manager MBA is a professional who holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree and specializes in managing projects across various industries. This role involves planning, executing, and closing projects while ensuring they meet deadlines, stay within budget, and achieve strategic objectives. The MBA provides advanced business knowledge and leadership skills, equipping project managers to handle complex projects and lead cross-functional teams effectively. Project Manager MBAs often work in fields such as construction, IT, healthcare, and finance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager with an MBA, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager with an MBA, you need expertise in project planning, budgeting, leadership, and strategic decision-making, typically supported by an MBA and relevant project management experience. Familiarity with project management software like Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira, and certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2 are highly valued. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills help set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are vital for ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope and budget, and aligned with organizational objectives.

Having an MBA can provide a Project Manager with advanced knowledge in business strategy, leadership, and financial management, which are valuable when overseeing multifaceted projects. Employers often view an MBA as evidence of strong analytical and organizational skills, as well as the ability to lead cross-functional teams. Additionally, it can open doors to larger or more complex projects and may accelerate career progression into senior management or executive roles. Many organizations also value the networking and problem-solving capabilities that MBA graduates bring to the table.

Is an MBA worth it for project management?

An MBA can enhance a project manager's leadership, strategic thinking, and business skills, potentially leading to higher-level roles and increased salary. However, practical experience, certifications like PMP, and technical skills are also highly valued in project management careers, and an MBA is not always a requirement for advancement.

About the Role:

Business Operations at Motive is a highly cross-functional group that is responsible for developing our go-to-market strategy, improving go-to-market efficiency, and ensuring that we are hitting our growth targets. Our team is maniacal about and energized by the challenge of getting our hands dirty in any problem across Sales, Marketing, or Customer Success, and finding ways to help us scale more efficiently. We are a low-ego, highly-motivated group that collaborates with cross-functional stakeholders to drive alignment and execution. Examples of major strategic initiatives Business Operations takes on are optimizing the structure of our sales force, experimenting with new sales and marketing motions, and determining how we can leverage AI to improve operations.

  • Lead cross-functional initiatives that connect the dots across different functions and stakeholders. You will be the driving force behind high-impact, high-visibility strategic initiatives that are critical to scaling our business by facilitating communication and collaboration between departments to ensure alignment and effective execution.
  • Create robust analytical models and dashboards to provide actionable insights into go-to-market and product performance. You will take a hands-on approach to proactively identify trends, opportunities, and risks, translating data into clear recommendations for optimizing commercial results - leveraging AI throughout the process to drive scale and efficiency.
  • Champion operational efficiency by continuously identifying and addressing process inefficiencies - you never stop asking "can we be doing this better?" Design and implement innovative solutions to streamline workflows, enhance productivity, and drive a culture of continuous improvement across the organization.

What We're Looking For:

  • 6+ years of relevant experience in consulting, banking, private equity, or Strategy & Operations, combined with in-house at a SaaS company
  • Recent experience at a hypergrowth and rapidly scaling SaaS company
  • Recent Bachelor's degree required; MBA is a plus

  • Expert with Google Sheets & Excel, with the ability to build data models
  • Proficient in AI tools and comfortable leveraging AI to maximize effectiveness of daily work
  • Intellectual curiosity supported by exceptional analytical skill
  • Strong, demonstrated leadership capabilities
  • Experience working on cross-functional projects with various stakeholders and a demonstrated expertise in managing such projects
  • Able to work in ambiguous, fast paced, environments under tight and unpredictable timelines
