The Opportunity
Black & Veatch has an exciting opportunity within our Infrastructure Advisory Technical Delivery Team. The Geothermal Senior Consultant serves as a hands-on technical lead supporting engineering design, technical evaluations, and multidisciplinary integration of utility-scale geothermal surface facilities and associated infrastructure. In addition to core responsibilities, there may be opportunities for the individual to contribute additional time supporting similar project work aligned with their technical expertise.
This role focuses on surface systems (wellhead to point of interconnection) and the interfaces between subsurface resources and the electric grid, translating technical inputs into actionable design solutions.
The position supports technical diligence, feasibility studies, FEL/FEED engineering, and detailed design while collaborating across subsurface, process/mechanical, and power systems disciplines.
The Team
Black & Veatch's Infrastructure Advisory Business provides a portfolio of solutions focused on the asset lifecycle, including Asset Management & Operations & Maintenance, Infrastructure Technology, Cybersecurity solutions, Planning and Transactions. In this role you will be part of the Technical Team supporting Solutions including Asset Engineering and Transactions.
The Technical Team is a diverse team of professionals who are given a wide range of technical projects and skills to equip them to have a solid foundation and move into a specific career track as they advance and develop their skills and capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Evaluation and Advisory
  • Execute technical due diligence, feasibility studies, and risk assessments for geothermal surface and wellfield interface systems.
  • Develop technical deliverables defining assumptions, risks, constraints, and recommended paths forward.
  • Support Owner's Engineer / Independent Engineer scopes through disciplined technical review.
  • Translate subsurface data (well performance, reservoir behavior) into actionable surface system inputs.

Engineering & Design Leadership (Surface Systems)
  • Lead or support engineering of surface systems including heat rejection, steam/brine handling, and reinjection systems.
  • Develop and review mass and energy balances, PFDs, and equipment definitions.
  • Support FEL/FEED deliverables, Basis of Design documents, and system layouts.
  • Participate in HAZOP, operability reviews, and commissioning activities.

Subsurface Interface & Wellhead / Reinjection Design
  • Provide technical oversight of surface-subsurface interface design including wellhead and reinjection systems.
  • Integrate subsurface inputs including flow, pressure, temperature, and fluid chemistry into design basis.
  • Support conceptual and FEED-stage design of wellhead piping, control systems, and reinjection networks.
  • Ensure alignment between reservoir strategy and surface system performance.
  • Identify and communicate interface risks between reservoir behavior and surface system design.

Grid / Interconnection Coordination (Desired, not required)
  • Support interconnection studies by defining plant assumptions and coordinating across disciplines.
  • Provide inputs for power flow and hosting capacity studies and review results.
  • Evaluate impacts of interconnection constraints on plant configuration and auxiliary loads.
  • Assist in identifying grid upgrade considerations and impacts to design.

Lead preparation of reports, presentations, processes, tools, models, and other deliverables to effectively communicate analysis and recommendations to clients. This includes:
  • Technical due diligence reports and feasibility studies.
  • Basis of Design and FEL/FEED engineering packages.
  • Review of heat/mass balances, PFDs, and conceptual designs.
  • Surface-subsurface integration definitions.
  • Interconnection study inputs and review comments.

May support development of proposals, including strategy, scope and fee, and may support business development activities.
Proactively develops additional knowledge and experience in area(s) of expertise and participates in professional development opportunities and with professional societies, including presenting at conferences. Shares current knowledge and independently mentors lower level and mid-level professionals in latest technology and processes.
Actively coordinates with team members and subject matter experts to align project deliverable content, ensure high-quality deliverables and successful project outcomes, including:
  • Subsurface/reservoir engineering teams.
  • Process, mechanical, and electrical engineering disciplines.
  • Power systems and interconnection engineers.
  • Environmental/permitting and project management teams.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience across feasibility, FEED, detailed design, and construction support.
  • Hands-on experience with surface systems and wellhead/reinjection integration.
  • Experience supporting technical evaluations or Owner's Engineer roles.
  • Experience with thermal/process system design and fluid handling, multidisciplinary coordination, and technical risk identification and communication.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or equivalent.
  • Five or more (5+) years' experience in geothermal and/or thermal power generation projects.
  • Experience with advanced geothermal systems or emerging technologies.
  • Exposure to interconnection studies or grid coordination.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree or relevant work experience. 7+ years experience in a business/consulting environment. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

This position will be based out of Black & Veatch office location within the United States.
