Project Manager, Commercial Operations – Battery Energy Storage

Location: Sausalito / San Francisco Bay Area, CA
Work Arrangement: Hybrid – onsite in Sausalito 1–2 days per week
Salary: $80,000–$100,000 base salary, based on experience
Industry: Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) / Renewable Energy

About Our Client

Our client is a growing battery energy storage system procurement and solutions provider helping commercial, industrial and utility-scale customers successfully deploy energy storage projects.

The company supports customers across equipment sourcing, procurement, financing, logistics, system integration and commissioning. Its team helps clients navigate an increasingly complex market shaped by tariffs, FEOC compliance, supply-chain risk, interconnection requirements and evolving energy policy.

This is an entrepreneurial team that moves quickly, cares deeply about its work and is committed to accelerating the energy transition—while maintaining a healthy respect for life outside of work.

The Opportunity

Our client is seeking a highly organized and execution-focused Project Manager, Commercial Operations to manage project delivery across its growing portfolio of battery energy storage projects.

This individual will own the plans, trackers, milestones and follow-through required to move multiple concurrent BESS projects from contract execution through equipment ordering, logistics, invoicing, delivery and operational handoff.

The Project Manager will report directly to the Managing Partner with a solid-line reporting relationship and to the Director of Operations through a dotted-line relationship and weekly operating cadence. This individual will also work closely with the company's Senior Engineer, Marketing Director and other internal and external stakeholders.

Approximately:

  • 75% of the role will focus on project and commercial operations management
  • 15% will involve executive partnership with the Managing Partner
  • 10% will involve cross-functional collaboration

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who gets genuine satisfaction from making things run: clean data, clear accountability, accurate documentation, proactive communication and reliable systems that prevent important details from falling through the cracks.

What You'll Do

  • Own the delivery of multiple concurrent battery energy storage projects from commercial handoff through equipment delivery and commissioning coordination
  • Build project plans, establish milestones, sequence activities and drive deliverables through completion
  • Maintain clear visibility across project status, customer requirements, supplier deliverables, manufacturing schedules, logistics milestones and delivery dates
  • Coordinate with battery, inverter and energy management system suppliers on open items, documentation, timelines and technical deliverables
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for customers, suppliers, logistics providers and other project partners
  • Maintain commercial operations trackers covering projects, contracts, equipment orders, logistics and invoicing
  • Ensure internal systems are accurate, current, decision-ready and audit-ready
  • Manage contract administration and track contractual obligations, documentation requirements, commercial milestones and outstanding items
  • Manage the invoicing cycle from beginning to end, including issuing invoices, tracking payments, following up and supporting reconciliation
  • Coordinate purchase orders, deposits, milestone payments and supporting commercial documentation
  • Track equipment manufacturing, factory testing, freight, warehousing, delivery and commissioning schedules
  • Identify missing information, ambiguous responsibilities and potential delays before they affect the project
  • Build and maintain automations across Notion, Slack, Gmail and Google Workspace
  • Create deadline reminders, missing-data alerts, status notifications and other automated workflows that improve accountability
  • Monitor AI-generated meeting summaries and relevant Slack channels to identify decisions, commitments and action items
  • Partner with the Managing Partner on priorities, scheduling and follow-up to ensure his time remains focused on the company's highest-value activities
  • Coordinate meetings and schedules across operations, sales, engineering, customers and external partners
  • Draft clear internal and external communications, including correspondence on behalf of senior leadership
  • Contribute thoughtful recommendations during operational planning and process-improvement discussions
  • Help create scalable processes, templates and standard operating procedures as the company and project portfolio grow

What We're Looking For

  • At least 4–6 years of experience in project management, commercial operations, project delivery, business operations or a similar position
  • Previous professional experience working with battery energy storage systems is required
  • Demonstrated experience managing BESS projects, equipment delivery, procurement, logistics, engineering coordination, commissioning or related commercial workstreams
  • Strong understanding of the participants and dependencies involved in battery storage projects, including customers, developers, EPCs, OEMs, engineers, logistics providers and commissioning teams
  • Track record of managing multiple concurrent projects with meaningful external dependencies
  • Ability to describe projects personally delivered, including challenges encountered and how those issues were resolved
  • Experience building and maintaining structured operational systems using Notion, Airtable, Google Sheets or comparable platforms
  • Hands-on experience with workflow automation tools such as Notion automations, Slack workflows, Zapier, Make or Google Apps Script
  • Fluency with AI tools and the ability to incorporate AI effectively into daily workflows
  • Strong attention to detail across contracts, invoices, project documentation and commercial records
  • Confident external communication skills and the ability to pursue overdue information while maintaining positive relationships
  • High verbal bandwidth and the ability to absorb numerous priorities during a fast-moving conversation and convert them into organized action
  • Excellent written communication, including the ability to draft correspondence on behalf of leadership
  • Strong judgment, discretion and comfort working directly with company founders and senior leaders
  • Low-ego, execution-first approach with a willingness to express an informed opinion
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and comfort working within a small, fast-growing company
  • Ability to work onsite in Sausalito, California, one to two days per week

Preferred Experience

  • Direct experience with commercial, industrial or utility-scale BESS projects
  • Familiarity with battery systems, inverters, energy management systems and related project documentation
  • Experience with BESS procurement, equipment orders, supply-chain coordination or logistics
  • Knowledge of tariffs, FEOC compliance, interconnection or renewable-energy project requirements
  • HubSpot experience
